About that herd immunity thing:

I'm not a fan of The Hill as a trusted source, so we'll have to see if this story is reported in more reliable places.

Also, the big orange one was only able to remember the name Google, so that's what he said at the presser yesterday. The company is actually Verily, and they are planning to roll out "something" on Monday but won't give more details. They say that yes, they have worked somewhat with Google on this, lol.
Reinfected? Yikes if true!

I thought him listing google was odd. They have their own web programmers, pretty much any good sized company does. If I was developing a site I would go to a company that only builds sites though.

You know how they’re saying that since not everyone have been/can be tested, the actual percentage of people dying or being severely affected is lower, which makes sense, how do we know what actual percentage of people die from seasonal flu? Could that also be lower?

For sure it is lower. That is also why I think the WHO is mumbling BS when claiming so far Europe got hit hardest by "Corona" so far. So, what is their source? Yeah right, it is based on reported infections... Is there any reason West Europeans are more likely to get tested and self report as potential vector? Quite likely, Western Europeans know they won't be persecuted for self reporting and given generally well working public health systems across all Western Europe they also know the sooner they get tested/self report the sooner they will get the best help available. Can that be said for the rest of the world? Even if public health care would be provided many cultures have a mentality that reporting as sick equals evading work and is thus disloyal to their employer (sadly slowly spreading here too).

For scientists they sure are pretty simple minded at the WHO these days ... just taking the numbers from reports seems a bit short sighted.

So following these logics Flu might not be much more fatal in developing countries. It might just be that severe cases get more likely reported - which of couse are more often fatal than less severe ones.

No, I don't think this is to do with herd immunity, no matter what The Hill's headline writer thinks.

The story actually says,
As much remains unknown about the virus, cases of reinfection have health experts worried that the illness could remain dormant after an apparent recovery.

“Once you have the infection, it could remain dormant with minimal symptoms,” Philip Tierno Jr., professor of microbiology and pathology at New York University, told Reuters.

“And then you can get an exacerbation if it finds its way into the lungs,” he said.
If that's the case, it shouldn't affect herd immunity, which means, when sufficient people have contracted the virus, that the unfortunate woman in whom the symptoms have recurred won't pass the infection on, unless she comes into direct contact with someone who hasn't already encountered the virus.

The big worry is that immunity is only temporary -- that would be seriously bad news for everyone, but as it is, the story is bad news for the woman rather than for everyone.

My inbox has been flooded these past couple of days with these. Most eye-opening are those from restaurants I frequent (at least enough for me to give them my email address) explaining how they're dealing with the situation, to include enforcing good hygiene and food handling practices. And my first thought was, "you weren't doing that already???"

Our Governor may be right wing trash, but he is competent and taking advice from real experts instead of his feelings. And the local governments are working with the state plan. Yes, this is a massive inconvenience, but it is the only way to slow the spread of the virus and protect vulnerable populations. The state response is putting people before party. I'll give credit for that.

The pic looks like my work in tech too. Can I do pretty much everything I need to do? Yes. Is it the most efficient setup when you have your work space designed for work and your home space designed for relaxing? No. Will people go stir crazy in a week or so? Probably.

2006?
I got an email from my local supermarket explaining that delivery guys could no longer come inside the house, and asking me to keep two metres away from him. I would no longer have to sign his screen, he will do that. Delivery arrived two hours later, the delivery guy didn't seem to have had the memo, asked us to sign the screen etc.

This morning royal mail delivery guy put my parcel on the wet front door step and ran to the gate when I opened the door. He said he has to sign for my parcel, once establishing that I am happy with it. Amazon guy did the same.

Locally, people still seem to be attending events, planning events, proceeding as normal. It's weird. Meanwhile the supermarket has no loo roll, pasta, rice, cleaning products, paracetamol, and they're rationing tins. But the local corner shop had loo roll, disinfectant, paracetamol, and spray cleaner. So people are preparing, but meanwhile the local facebook group is posting a lot of very angry things about people stockpiling things, and talking about an overreaction.

How they feel this evening, now that Spain has announced a lockdown on Monday, and Norway, and Ireland has locked down, and we are looking like idiots for carrying on carrying on I don't know.

One of my facebook friends works for the local health authority and said that there is no noticeable increase in people needing ITU beds in Lincolnshire, and sounded as though he thought I was overreacting, telling people to keep away from groups of people etc. Meanwhile the deaths in the UK doubled today.

We are now joining the #StaythefuckAtHome group, except for my daughter's boyfriend who is still going to work. I'm hoping that the hotel he works at will decide to shut down once people are no longer socialising, but at present socialisation continues unabated in Lincoln. The fools believe that the Government will tell them what they need to do in order to keep safe, and if they haven't told them to stop, they won't.

We’re actually really lucky here because all the “lock down” type measures as well as all levels of governments taking it seriously happened from the get go. The people affected at the moment are those coming back from abroad. Testing is not limited and we already have a hospital designated for all Covid patients. Everyone in the medical field is on alert, with retired personnel coming in. Obviously social spreading will still happen, but not as quick.

Schools are closed since Thursday, and our premier just today prohibited hospital and retirement home visits and asked that all people over 70 stay home. While he was saying this at a press conference, I was listening to a cultural show on the radio and the host is over 70 so he was like, oh! I guess that’s me! So he announced on air that it would be his last show till further notice.

Anyhow, I’m glad most are taking it seriously even though there aren’t that many infected yet (compared to elsewhere). This is exactly the time when people should follow directions, not after.
