Discord Age Verification

Mods feel free to discard this thread if it's being discussed in another. There was some discussion of finding Discord difficult to track as a useful resource of communication or information. But do you plan to continue using it now that age verification is required to access "mature sexual" and "graphic" content? The instructions claim that they are only flagging adult accounts and keeping none of the evidence after the process is completed. Non-verified accounts will be set to "teen" mode which automatically restricts access to "mature sexual" and "graphic" content as defined by, well, I don't know.

I already did this last year, after the UK Online Safety Act came into force and Discord mandated age-verification. I'm not happy about, more so with regard to my personal information being held by a service which will almost certainly get hacked or leak that data. Thankfully, I no longer need Discord quite as much as I used to, so I'm now down to just over a half-dozen servers. There are definitely better options out there, but alas Discord is (mostly) free so that's what a lot of people have opted for.

I really don't know. I don't trust them at all.... the UK data hack proved they were liars and they didn't seem to suffer much consequences from that. But I also depend a lot on my discords for talking to many old friends I don't otherwise have contact with. I also use some role play groups from SL that might become walled off due to these restrictions so that could be a problem.

My SL avatar would flag me as a child and female which are both false. I don’t know why people see Khamon as a girl and have increased his basket thrice to make his maleness apparent. Perhaps he needs one of those talking attachments that announces its availability everywhere all the time ha ha ha.

I had a Discord set up during Covid so I could just have a way for students to casually ask questions. I'd leave it running while I was working. But I have not used it much since.

I mean, I'm no computer security expert, but this seems like a reasonably obvious issue ...

It would be possible for the AI to judge if the scan is of age or not (approximately) without it leaving your device. So what they are promising is POSSIBLE, but I think we all agree not to trust their word.

...I just ordered an old person mask I will try to do this with, lol.

Yeah .............. somehow the assurance, "Your photo will not leave your device. Instead, our AI software, which is totally legit, will enter your device and have a look around, so NO PROBLEM ..." is not stirring up a lot of enthusiasm in me ...

And, as I think of it, unless they plan to load an entire AI engine onto my computer, wouldn't the photo still have to be transferred to the AI server to be processed?

Based upon what Discord has said, a large portion of users will not need to be explicitly age verified. They use other metrics to estimate age of users. If that is unable to determine age, then it will be necessary for access to adult content. I am taking a wait and see approach to what happens.
