I’ve always considered myself introverted, even though I’m not shy or antisocial as some like to describe those who are introverts, I certainly would never die of loneliness on a deserted island. Being surrounded by too many people for too long makes me grumpy. For work, years ago, I took the Myers-Briggs test (INTP), but as you all know, it isn’t really based on any science.

I think we had a thread about the subject on SLU once.

Just read this essay in The Guardian and thought I’d share.

I’m chatty, outgoing and friendly. But ‘extrovert’ doesn’t feel right to me

Although the author does speak of her own extroverted tendencies, the article goes a little further and simply speaks about personality traits. Anyway, I found it intersecting. It isn’t too long.

Also, she mentions another test - The Big Five AKA OCEAN.
Never took that one.

I have probably mentioned this in an old thread if there was one.

In my experience, people like me, they come to me for help and advice and I try to help them. I have, many times in my life, ended up in what I would call "leadership" type roles.

In general, I feel like I am pretty introverted. Also, I hate people, why do they keep coming to me for things. Go away.

Maybe that is why I am so helpful? If I help, then they will go away sooner!

I agreed because I feel the same way. I am a major introvert. There are days I don't even go to the store because it's just too people-y. But I will help anyone with their issues. That's why I enjoy working the IT help desk.

I've thought before how there is at least 2 dimensions to the introvert/extrovert scale. Besides the need for socialization there is also tolerance for strangers. I have one second cousin who is a hyper extrovert who knows no strangers. I also have one friend in particular who's very extroverted but doesn't like strangers and mostly just wants to bug her own friends. ....but isn't really introverted since she can't stand being alone.

I think almost everyone requires some socialization but also has some limit to their social battery. Ideally these 2 things are proportional to each other but this isn't necessarily the case. I think a common cause for depression can be requiring more socialization than they can endure. It's also worth mentioning that some social interaction can be "low quality" in that it drains you but doesn't satisfy and vice versa.

So, overly emotional grump with no friends, quite dumb, and a selfish slob. Sounds about right. =^-^=

I'm often alone, but never lonely. I do need a few moments of social time daily, but really not much. I get more than enough while walking errands or getting coffee in my neighborhood.

In the past the more social I had to be at work, the less I wanted anything to do with people on my own time. And vice versa.

Being social is like exercise. I need some, but I'm in no condition too run marathon, and have no desire to try. :)

It's just sitting there spinning on "see results".
I disabled my adblocker before trying and it worked fine.

Nothing surprising.

Neuroticism(lowest), particularly low on 'anger' and 'depression', highest on 'immoderation' and 'anxiety'.

Extraversion(low): high on cheerfulness, low on excitement-seeking

Openness-to-experience(highest): high on imagination/intellect/liberalism, lowest on adventurousness

Agreeableness(high): high on morality/altruism/cooperation, low on trust.

Conscientiousness(high): highest on cautiousness, self-efficacy, dutifulness, lowest on self-discipline & achievement-striving
