Not to victim blame, kids can be awful, but it does raise the question of what (if anything) might have happened that provoked this level of hate/disrespect. Other than the regular old collapse of the illusion of human decency, civilization and manners. (Thank you TFG for being a role model for budding young sociopathic narcissists).

On the other hand... given how badly kids treat each other online, maybe crossing this line will result in some policy changes that help curb it.

I wouldn't assume anything, but that is still a fair point and it should be considered and looked into -definitely.

I haven't seen this covered in the news, and I don't expect to. But facebook is now censoring posts warning about project 2025.

I think this because twice I have tried to share Robert Reich's post on it, and then the post spins and spins but never actually. posts.

Facebook has started putting a warning under project 2025 posts saying that the claims are exaggerated and false and pointing to a 'fact checking' website.

That website is "The Dispatch" which is a far right online rag.

SOoooooooooo that's a thing that's happening.

[edit]This is the facebook post that you're not allowed share: the unshareable Robert Reich post

I got around it by posting the link to his post in my feed, instead of 'sharing'. I also got a scary warning that my posts will be pushed down in people's feed from now on, too.

Among other changes to the platform, Reddit now lets you opt out of political ads.

I decided to check out Threads yesterday, and I was surprised that Meta does not own Threads.com. That seems kind of a weird thing.

A couple of years ago I joined LinkedIn because I was stupid.

I got it because I was starting to get serious about maybe doing 3D work for money and had this impression that having a LI page was more or less a standard part of establishing your legitimate existence as a worker in whatever field you work in. This seemed to make sense to me, because before I joined LinkedIn, whenever I clicked on someone's LI profile it was basically just some personal info, their education, and their employment history. And that looked reasonable to me and I thought that's what LinkedIn was. Then I got an account.

It turns out that in reality LinkedIn is a Facebook-like social network; there's a feed of posts that an algorithm pushes at you. About half of it is want ads and event notices from whatever sectors you claimed an interest in, which makes sense and is what I expected. But the other half is...just, god-awful. Overconfident advice from self-described hustle gurus, hype-CEOs, and grifter influencer types gushing about how much they love being soulless corporate stooges who devote every spare second of their lives to their company.

Like, remember all those videos of everybody crying when Kim Jong Il's death was announced, and it just goes on and on and even keeps escalating with people trying to outdo each other because nobody is going to be the one who stopped crying first, or didn't wail loudly enough? Imagine that, except instead of theatrical displays of phony grief it's toxic positivity and people bragging about how they work even on vacation and, like, while they're in the hospital and stuff. That's the LinkedIn social experience.

No, the people who really run the internet aren't using Mastodon, they're on IRC. ;-)

I mostly use my Linked in th se days for access to their learning platform which I get through work. I had a vague idea of trying to use it as a social platform instead of FB, briefly, because FB had too much politics.

But yeah, it's basically as you described.

It's relatively harmless if you never really go there, and if you do, there are plug inside to remove the social feed.

At this point the most annoying thing about it is the endless recruiter spam. It's always an agency so you don't really know if the actual company is worthwhile. They almost all lost "remote" which would be fun, but then it's like, "Data Center Technician" (which is also my title now) and it's like, you can't really do this job "remote".

I was really tempted recently by one from Microsoft that seemed like it may actually be remote work and didn't come from some shady agency.

That reminds me, I should go delete my LinkedIn account now. I'M RETIRED!! I CAN DO THAT NOW!
I'M SO JEALOUS! I hate linkedin more than any social media but with my career path it would be seen as very weird if I wasn't on there...

Late this afternoon at a Parisian airport, French authorities detained Pavel Durov, the founder of the Telegram messaging/publication service. They are allegedly planning to hit him tomorrow with serious charges related to abetting terrorism, fraud, money laundering, and crimes against children, all of it apparently stemming from a near-total lack of moderation on Telegram. According to French authorities, thanks to its encryption and support for crypto, Telegram has become the new top tool for organized crime.

The French outlet TF1 had the news first from sources within the investigation. (Reuters and CNN have since run stories as well.) Their source said, "Pavel Durov will definitely end up in pretrial detention. On his platform, he allowed an incalculable number of offenses and crimes to be committed, which he does nothing to moderate nor does he cooperate."
Tucker Carlson is bitching that it's a Western country (and Biden ally) who is doing this, not Russia (who he acknowledges tried to control it when Durov lived there). So this is likely a good move on France's part.

Social media companies are slowly waking up to the fact that, unlike the US, European governments (including the UK) regard freedom of speech as a qualified rather than an absolute right, meaning that they're allowed under the ECHR to restrict freedom of expression to the minimum extent necessary to, for example protect others from hateful or defamatory speech and to prevent the promotion of terrorism, terrorist organisations, crime and disorder. And governments expect social media companies to cooperate with them in this endeavour.
