Not the society, right, my bad.

Here's those other weirdos.

Thanks, yeah I was looking up this Federalist website when you answered.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Federalist_(website)

A real piece of work of which one of the founders (Ben Domenech ) is a plagiarist, was a member of the Heartland Institute, took money from Phillip Morris (the cigarette company) in order to fight the ACA and was found guilty of labor law violations when he threatened his employees should they ever think to unionize, among so so so many other things.

Bad legal take doesn't even begin to describe this guy and his cohorts. They do not disclose their funding so I'm guessing a heap of Rebekah Mercer and Betsy Devos/Erik Prince family money and/or funneled Russian money.

I'm just mad I found it remotely plausible.

Don't be. In today's climate and with the damage that the Federalist Society has done it's not all that farfetched to have thought, even if briefly, that they would indeed spout something along those lines with perhaps more legalese but with the same sentiment.

Right now there's this spectacle-trial going on where Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are trying to out-victim each other, and I hope as always that by the end the truth is made as clear as it can be and justice is done.

But, also, people are becoming weirdly invested in trial and the characters involved. Like, sports-team-fanatic, personality-cult type invested. It's creeping me out.

And it wouldn't be so bad if the internet's collective algorithms didn't insist that I was super interested in this trial despite never having clicked on even a single link relevant to it.

But every couple of months the larger media sphere here in the US just selects a random, completely unremarkable criminal or civil trial and decides that, of all the proceedings going on across the nation at any given time, right now the entire country cares intensely about THIS TRIAL. Not even "for reasons" but like a just-so kind of proposition. And they're going to cover every single angle of it.

If your point is: The media sucks. Well, yeah we know that.
It's not so much that; that part's always been true.

It's more the part about everyone going along with it, even people who should know better.

And also just, people diving into parasocial fawning and personality cults generally. It's a little more understandable or at least expected I guess when the subject is movie stars like Depp, or superstar athletes - as opposed to, say, politicians and corporate CEOs, which is a disturbing trend - but it's still creepy to me.
