Since it would have been cheaper to simply advice by Mastodon TOS, and pay any licensing fees or whatever, than to fight it in court, I have to assume that this was done for publicity.

There aren't any license fees. It is open source software. The Mastodon people couldn't sell it as closed source even if they wanted to since it is built with other open source software. All TFG would have to do is share the source code including any changes they made to it but they likely won't do that. I don't think they did it for publicity. It is simply the cheapest way they could put together a site.

There's literally hundreds of social media platforms they could have used. They probably didn't even check the licensing. I've been involved in making a major corporation's use of open source software compliant, and most developers just don't care or even know better.

They also copy-pasted their terms of service from Facebook. It still had references to Facebook properties in it. Like many of his projects, they are cheaping out on building it, so they can maximize the profit on the investor scam.

Sue them for copyright infringement. It is similar to the Windows operating system. Windows is licensed, not sold. If you violate the terms of the license, they can go after you. As a practical matter, Microsoft generally only goes after corporate pirates, not individuals. Seeing as this social network is raising capital on Wall Street, they are worth going after for infringement, and I'm sure plenty of lawyers are willing to take the case. As a courtesy, Mastodon gave them 30 days to comply before bringing in the lawyers.

I should be careful of this site - for some reason simply logging-on to it brings up a box with a list of four of my email addresses that I've used recently, none of which has anything to do with them (or art). This is on Firefox on Linux Mint btw, I don't know if it shows up the same on any other browser or op-sys.

It shows two gmail addresses for me to choose to log in with if I wanted to log in via google there. I don't think they are able to see the information in that drop down.

Mine shows 4 addresses, 2 of which I've only ever used on an unrelated non-google email package. I'm familiar with the usual drop-down list of addresses when logging on to stuff, but this was a separate window containing nothing but those 4 addresses. I've never seen a list like that, in that format, on any browser or op-sys in the 25+ years I've been using them. Plus - I'm an adherent of the "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you..." school of life .

My guess : it's reading cookies. The same sort of thing like when you shop online and then you see ads for the same thing you were looking at on unrelated sites.

When you say logging on do you mean entering a user name and password or just landing on the page? I never got any kind of log in prompt with Chrome or Bing on Windows 10 just landing on the page and looking around, other than the Chrome prompt to use Google log in creds. I always just close that and mosey on.
