At about a hundred dollars or so (give or take) for a one terrabyte SSD ....

Yep.

As a dedicated Cache drive however, a 250GB or 500GB unit is not a bad choice.

Speaking of SSD's, I have a 500 GB nearly-new SSD drive from a failed upgrade project lying around. Someone please throw bricks or something at me for thinking it would be worthwhile to upgrade a 10 year old machine!
My Wintendo is from 2012 and I only upgraded from my 2010 Mac Pro a couple years ago.

Nothing wrong with upgrading a 10 year old machine :p

I just splurged on a 1tb SSD for my dying HDD, and impulse bought this 240gb sdd for like $35, and spent tues setting it up. The video card I was using gave up the ghost and I replaced it with a different one which I had thought was dead -but seems to be chugging along quite nicely...

The interesting thing (for me) being that I can get along nicely enough with a 2gb card (firestorm turns on ALM by default on it, and it gets 20fps with shadows enabled). That was something I'd been worried about because of the video card shortage.

So ...this desktop is from 2016/2017 and I think with the card and ssd I've added another 3 or 4 years of life onto it hopefully.

I'm half thinking of buying a ssd and cable for my 2011 imac I've turned into a build machine so I'll second that! (I just wish I had more options for upgrading the imac le sigh)

The machine I'm using right now was a Christmas gift (2019). The two that got everything together made sure to lower the build cost a bit by reusing at least the old GPU from one of their PCs (an nVidia GeForce 980 TI) while putting a combination of a 500GB SSD as the "system" drive and a 2TB HDD as the Data drive.

When it came time to replace the external HDD I have (containing over twenty years - give or take - of data) I went with an enclosure and 2TB 2.5" drive.

It boils down to cost for me.

2006?
I took over as clerk to the Quaker Fellowship for Afterlife Studies last autumn, and it's been a ton of work, and as I'm working from home as a genealogist, it has cut down the spare time I used to spend in SL somewhat. I still log in nearly every day, and I recently built an exhibition of the work of Hilma af Klint, an artist I only discovered a few weeks ago. It's in the sky above The Island, but the need to use telepads to get there, as point-to-point teleporting is switched off is a bit of an obstacle.

I enjoyed putting the exhibition together, and spend an inordinate amount of time trying to get my inventory under control. I've been searching for old stuff which will work with BOM now, but it doesn't stop me constantly buying new clothing and spending more time organizing that! I occasionally follow DJ ColeMarie Soleil around the grid for her events, make the odd thing and put in my shop, chat to friends, attend events. Had a fun time on the Fantasie Faire bus the other day and was surprised we survived the sim crossings, saw the dinosaurs and bought myself a pet Diplodocus, something I've wanted since I went to the Natural History museum when I was about 8!

I couldn't run SL right now, even if I wanted to. I bricked my GPU and am subsisting on an ancient Nvidia card at the moment. However, were I still in SL, I would be doing much the same as I always did. I'd be spending time with friends, wandering around that vast world appreciating the beauty of superb builds and probably going to concerts, supporting the artists.

If you still have a hard drive, consider updating to an SSD. It really helps the performance of the SL cache.
I may not have a choice if it is the hd. Meaning, other half will be the one paying for it so he'll be the one ordering it. Hardware is his department. l'm software. lol Of course, I do know how to put a desktop together and get it up and running in about 15 minutes, even if he does monkey with the tiny switch on the hd and leave it in the wrong position... on purpose. 🤭

I have been playing SL quite a bit more since the Pandemic hit. I alternate between being really active and taking a break for a a few months. I usually do Equestrian based roleplay and attend Equestrian related events. Since I am currently horseless and barnless in RL (recently moved to a new country to be with my partner and waiting for some things to come in so I can get a job and then hopefully get back into riding again) this fill my Equestrian need lol.
YAY! \o/ A horse nut I'm not related to by blood! :welcome:

Half of me says load up with twice as much RAM as you need, assign half of it to a RAMdisk, and point the cache to that. =^-^=
The other half says they still make hard drives? (o_O)

If it turns out to be the hd, that SSD might have a new forever home. You'll need to talk to the other half first though. If that's ok with you I'll PM you his SL name.

Sometimes the problem with an older machine is if you need to replace or add RAM, compatible RAM is either is overpriced or unavailable.
To replace a falling HDD with a SSD should be possible if it's SATA. If not, 7200RPM HDDs were still pretty cheap last I looked.

Yeah, straight age isn't a good measure. My old PC (replaced this week). I built it around 2011. I upgraded the video card, the RAM, the main HD to an SSD, the CPU and Board are still old, but they still work plenty fine.

Better CPU helps but CPU power has kind of plateaued out for usefulness and RAM and GPU are both a lot more important.

It nay well depend on the motherboard, too. That's just the problem I ran into with one system.RAM had taken a leap forward, but my MB couldn't use it because it didn't fit. And the RAM that did fit that system was hard to find since there was mostly no need.

Send me a VVO message and I'll return with my email. I'm rarely in SL anymore, learning C# and stuff. $10 and its yours.

I built mine in something like 2012. Still going strong except for having bricked my GPU. That's at the repair shop. They might be able to fix it. Lordy, I hope so. They are going to try and flash the proper bios for it. Have you seen the prices on GPU's? Everyone I spoke to agreed that trying to fix it rather than get a new GPU or tower was the way to go.

The individual prices for all components to make your own is so bad that it would be cheaper to get a whole tower, not something I have ever wanted. Pre-mades tend to not have good airflow, not great components and so on. But that is where we are at.

Should I HAVE to get a new one, can anyone speak to whether or not it should be Intel or AMD? I've always had AMD, and well, while reasonable in price, they never quite packed the punch of an Intel. I'm hearing now that it's pretty much the opposite with Intel losing ground, no innovations and that AMD is kicking their backside in terms of power?

Yes I know about the extremely ridiculous prices thanks to bitcoin or whatever the hell it is called. Don't get me started. I'm getting pissed just thinking about it because I can't really afford a $100 card much less one that costs $1200-$1500 USD. That is fucking bullshit.

I've had both AMD and Intel. I stick with AMD/Nvidia because I get better performance with AMD/Nvidia. It's the opposite for other poeple. Go with what works best for you.

ETA: My current laptop that I am on right now is an Intel i5/Nvidia and it runs Sims 4 very well. I've never had an SL viewer on it and don't really want to install one on it. My desktops are both Asus Essentios, one is 2.1 Ghz ( I want to say with a 970? don't remember) and the one that is down is 3.2 with Nvidia 1050 OC so yeah I wanna get it fixed and I am praying it isn't the GPU. All other cards we have on hand are not as good and may not even function.
