As someone with several long swords in my closet, yes, they generally get in the way. Their best use case is fighting an armored opponent on horseback, where the length and weight can injure the opposing horse, damage the rider's armor, or knock them off. On foot you are better off with a blade you can wear on your waist, or a curved one that can be more naturally pulled from over the shoulder.
