A statement from Neill's family says: "It is with immense sadness that the whānau [extended family] of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney, Australia.

"Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life.
"The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free.

My favorite Sam Neill film is the slightly obscure "The Dish". It's a gentle comedy (there is one laugh-out-loud joke), and Sam does his "twinkly-eyed favourite uncle" persona to great effect.

I think I'll go and watch it again.

RIP Sam.

I saw the review for that, and always meant to watch. He was a great actor.

Event Horizon was another great work of his. Very good actor.
I always made fun of his rather unconvincing scream in that movie, lol, but I really did like the movie and his performance overall.

I liked him in The Hunt for Red October as well. And I wasn't a huge fan of In the Mouth of Madness, but I liked him in it. He was a really cool actor.
