Yep, you're supposed to tier down to a free account first, then you can turn off payment. This has been a known thing for since 2006.
For everyone thinking these are the rules, you should have known better, you should have prepared...

I hope you never get sick and put SL on the back burner without preparing your shit for some down time.

It's not the worst thing that happens to you as an American when you get sick, but it does suck.

Call billing yet?

Not sure if this sounds out of place, bu~u~u~u~ut..... when I have a billing issue with a business, I find reaching out to said business's billing department can lead to a resolution. Maybe in my favour, maybe in theirs, but a resolution none the less.

Edit: and this includes Linden Lab. I was able to restore my account after challenging a billing issue after my credit card expired. I did have to use a new credit card but isn't that how things usually work?

Call billing yet?
It's now years in the past, and I no longer have a credit card to make good on my "debt" to LL. From what I understand from past such actions, my inventory has been wiped, and can't be recovered, so there's no point returning.
