Short answer - fuck yes they are. Homesteads in particular are a terrible value. With the economy what it is, it is getting harder and harder to justify paying for land in SL for many people.

Absolutely, and they've been overcharging for years. When I lost my job it was the first thing that got dropped.

I rent a homestead... didn't realize it was THAT bad of a deal. A full sim is more than I need and parcel is not enough and not enough privacy. Seems like it would be more than reasonable if they just increased prim allowances again.
