I didn't catch this thread back when it was first made, but a month ago a spectacular fissure erupted north of the town of Grindavik, which was evacuated. Lots of lava as expected, but luckily the fissure erupted on a slope that led the lava to flow away from the town, and that eruption ended after a few days.

However in recent days there has been more seismic activity in the same area, and this morning some new fissures opened, this time just north of Grindavik, causing a new evacuation. Crews have been battling all night and all morning to try and build some retention dykes to try and redirect the lava, but even while they were working a new fissure started erupting on the town side of the dyke, and as of the most recent video lava has started covering some roads and begun to flow into a residential area at the edge of the town.

An article from The Guardian said the magma was 1500 meters from town. It was timestamped 6:35 est, 2 and 1/2 hours ago. It is certainly less than that now. Here is a screenshot from the live cam Cody posted.
