Having a Hard Time Finding a Skin That Feels Like Me

Hey everyone, I am struggling to find a skin that feels right for my avatar. I have tried so many options, different creators, tones, appliers, BOM, but nothing quite clicks. It’s either that the tone is slightly off, or the face doesn’t match the personality I’ve built over time. It’s made me realize how personal this process is. It’s not just about aesthetics, it’s about identity.

I am curious if others have gone through something similar. Did you eventually find the one, or did you end up changing your whole look?

Just wanted to say that this post hit deep. Identity and expression are such big things in these spaces. Hope you find something that feels like “you,” whatever that ends up being.

Kind of?

I had used the same skin for ages. Even when things went to mesh bodies, I ended up ripping the textures so I could make my own Matriya Applier.

I also made a few custom versions messing around, like a tanned version, and I ended up using it in OpenSIM because I had gotten so attached to it.

I did eventually change it, and I like what I have now. But it took forever. I also have a similar issue on my alts, I change the skin but it feels and looks wrong.

I will add that for "Face doesn't match", sometimes that's the shape with the skin. Like I would not recommend drastic changes but especially in the mouth area sometimes a different skin needs slight adjusting to make it "fit" better.

I've been at odds with SL from the day I arrived. Almost 20 years later and I'm still struggling. The reigning aesthetic for women -- in mesh heads and skins -- is young and super feminine. I do not want either of those looks, and even when I managed to find a skin for older women that I liked, it wasn't available for a wide range of mesh heads or for BOM. I'm in a super small minority, so I understand why creators don't cater to my tastes, but it's still frustrating. I can see why so many butch lesbians just present as men in SL; it's closer to their core identity than the images of women in SL.

Yeah, same. Sometimes I just give up and go back to a potato avatar. Feels safer.

It’s reassuring to know others get how deep this can go beyond just looks.

Noodles, your experience really resonates with me! Making your own appliers sounds like dedication, maybe that’s what it takes to get it just right. And yes, I hadn’t thought much about tweaking the shape slightly to match the skin better. That’s a great tip, I’ll experiment with that!

Beebo, your perspective hits home. The limited options outside the mainstream aesthetics are definitely frustrating, especially when they don’t represent diverse identities.

Haha, I totally get the “potato avatar” fallback, sometimes simplicity feels safest when nothing else fits. It’s nice to know it’s a valid choice and there are good options out there for those moments.

I've given thumbs down to soooo many skins I've demod in SL because they were too young looking even for what specific purpose I was going to be using them for.

Though I did see a new skinnery skin at Kustom 9 that might be able to be tweaked for your needs, it is called Diona. The display reminded me of you a little bit:

Here's how the demo looked on me in-world in the honey shade:

I did a real test with the Skinnery "Doina" to see how it might work out in actual use:

Izzie's just released a version of their "Age yourself" appliers for Evo X at the Spoonful of Sugar event
