Why can't Musk give the job of naming his shit to someone with some competence for it? Christ, what an utter tool.

Grokipedia, Elon Musk’s alternative to Wikipedia, sparked to life on Monday afternoon. Then it went dark again. Then it sparked to life again Monday evening. As of this writing, it is up. In terms of style, it looks like Wikipedia with its optional dark mode turned on.

Based on a very brief review, it contains articles on most topics one would most easily expect in an encyclopedia, professing to have just under 900,000 in total. The website Wikicount says there are about 7 million English Wikipedia articles.

There are gaps in Grokipedia, however. For instance, at the moment it does not currently appear to have a dedicated article about the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

So, anyway...

First weird omission I found was on a search for "Son of Sam." Search results show a page on Son of Sam (song), and one on Son of Sam law. After that results lead to very non-Son of Sam topics. To find a page on the actual Son of Sam, you have to search on David Berkowitz. Pretty ridiculous since that...page mentions "Son of Sam" many many times. Searching "Son of Sam" on Wikipedia returns the page on David Berkowitz as the first result (of course it does!).

There also don't seem to be any internal links on any of Grokipedia's pages to other, you know, Grokipedia pages. The only links are in the references/footnotes to external sites. Half the fun of Wikipedia is losing yourself down a rabbit hole of variously linked topics. So there's no apparent relationship or categorization of content built up by Grok. It's all pretty flat.

All the fun, all the fun of Wikipedia is losing yourself down rabbit holes, all of it.

Well I really do welcome competition to the Wikipedia. Why? Because it got so stale in the last decade and then some, because it's such a black box with their shitty administrators gate keeping articles, edit wars and shady decision making. So it has been loosing lots of authors and editors over the years, but the shitty administration thriving on its own power trip is still there.

Problem is only I would have preferred if this competition would not have come from El Musko.

I understand his belief that wikipedia needs more competition... BUT it has competition. Encyclopedia Britannica is still around. And he even said Musk was not a very ideal competitor.

Wikipedia definitely needs competition. But this product is only a front to prop investment hype. It is not valid competition because there will ultimately be no useful substance available.

Yes, and I am by far means not alone with that. The promise of Wikipedia was that anyone can contribute, it's open and democratic. Nowadays it is anything but, a beauracratic monster and toxic cesspit it became instead. The problems Wikipedia has are endless edit wars, power hungry administrators, gatekeepers and such, who are driving authors away.

More importantly also it fails to gain new authors.

I mean there are even scientific studies about this:

So yes, my problem with Wikipedia are the power hungry people who run it and twisted into a system which is anything but nowadays what it was supposed to be.

And it goes back a long time ago, like the Seigenthaler affair from 2005.

There's a facebook meme of side-by-side wiki/grok entries on plagiarism. Nearly identical.

Everyone is checking it out!

I tried Elon Musk's Wikipedia clone and boy is it racist

Amongst the racism discussion, I was delighted to see this:

To putz around on Grokipedia is to read through Musk’s attempt to rewrite the bulk of history to suit his own ends. That’s why, when I tried to search for a “Grokipedia” entry on Grokipedia, I found no entry at all.
Jokingly, a few of the pages returned for a search on "grokipedia" are:
  • "Criticism of Wikipedia for racial bias" (lol)
  • "Predictions of the end of Wikipedia"
Maybe it'll go up in the Rapture?

He's stealing from Asimov now.

At least it seems he's indirectly admitting that Grokipedia is a stupid name.

Does he not actually ever read? Encyclopedia Galactica is a useless project set up as a distraction from the plot to overthrow the established government of Terminus. Oh, but then, he may actually know that.

Most definitely Yes to the last part, but in regards to the first part I'm certain Musk's comprehension of science fiction tropes and concepts are barely surface level and shows he probably hasn't read much of it, if any at all. For example, if you truly grokked the meaning behind the neologism "grok," you wouldn't use it for the name of a machine-based pattern identifier.

From what little I know of Heinlein, I suspect he and and Voldemort Musk would have become good friends, and we would hate them both. Virulently.

They would, in fact, be best friends that hated each other or at best be good friends that didn't know each other existed.

So, if he grokked grok, he wouldn't call grok grok.
