It doesn't look like an ideal implementation (yet?), but definitely an improvement over the current avenue for mesh importing. And a sign the Lab is still engaged.

New Release: 2025.05 - glTF Mesh Import

(And no, it's not pronounced "/j/itf." That second letter is a lowercase L. So... "gee-ell-tee-eff:")

The sequel will probably be better.

glTF looks like some sort of gamer acronym.

Good Luck To Fun or something?

How would you explain what this is to someone on about 4 hours sleep and has been up for 17 hours?

In short, glTF is a 3d modeling mesh asset format, similar in a number of ways to Collada (.dae) which Second Life has supported for a while now. Some benefits to glTF is that it's not as complex to support - particularly since the file formats are JSON-based and can be parsed or used with many different tools and applications, and it provides support for more current rendering features, like PBR.

This is good news and it couldn't come soon enough. Collada is basically defunct now, it's abandonware and Second Life is practically the only thing that uses it anymore. It's not even going to be included in future releases of Blender. gITF is and will be though, and it's like a modern and popular format.

The folks at the Lab (well, user AxlTruth - who appears to be a fan of Labubu dolls...) has put out a "Second Life University" video about glTF. It's a decent introduction to the format, provides information for content creators, discusses PBR materials and how they relate to glTF, etc.
