Cold hot take: voices with dialog (not just sounds like grunts) for the player character kinda ruins games.

Diversity today is a thing, so many potential buyers just expect that in a big game like this. You don't have diversity? They won't buy it, it's that simple!

Although for some the choice between only two options nowadays might be not enough, and they'd expect more before buying it.

.
This.

As long as I can choose between male/female AND customize then if I have the extra bucks and I am interested in the game/really want it I'll buy. If not, no sale. Ever.

If they want to stick with just one then they should make it genderless AND customizable.

So would you not play a Tomb Raider game because you can only be Lara Croft, or The Witcher 3 because you only can be Geralt?

I did in the past. About 15 or so years ago. Times have changed. You could say SL was a large part of that change for me.

Frankly, I just want [highly] customizable avatars in every game I play. :giggle:

In SL it makes sense, you have a character that is a representation of you. In games, you are often playing the story of a particular character. In Assasin's Creed, each one has been the story of an Assassin - Altair, Ezio, Jacob and Evie, etc.. Each GTA game has told the story of a specific character (GTA V had three characters, and did rightfully take criticism for at least one not being female). Tomb Raider has always been Lara Croft's story, etc.

I think there is room for both. Environments where you are making a char that represents you (or is just a character to play the game with), by all means it needs full customization options and support for gender representations beyond the binary as well (seem the Sims 4). It doesn't make sense in all situations, though, but the more diverse games do become, the better.

I get what you are saying and don't necessarily disagree. But even in the Sims 4 I can get CC and customize my characters. Very highly, too. And each one of them is a representation of me.

I think that is where the difference lies. All characters, even the ones that are representations of a specific story's main character, are representations of the player. I know others don't see it that way but that is how I have always seen it. It's not likely to change.

My point about the Sims 4 was they removed gender restrictions altogether:

The Sims 4 Expands Gender Customization Options

I have noticed it is becoming more common in games. In The Elder Scrolls Online, the costumes can be worn by either gender. In Forza Horizon 4, which added clothing items to the game for the first time, the items can be worn by either gender.

To be frank...most games I have played could very easily been male or female without an impact to the "story" they were telling.

Watchdogs 1 and 2, any AC, farcry primal, halo, any gta...etc etc.

I'm not sure why you feel you need to stand up for one sex only focused stories? We've had this for decades...why wouldn't you want progress on video games?

lol I've known about that for years. If I'm not mistaken S4 was the first game to do that.

I'm not standing up for one sex only games. I'm just making the point that there are games that do tell the story of a particular character, that is all - so it is not realistic to always expect the full spectrum of gender and customization options for every single game. Games are definitely more interesting if there are more than one character you can play.

Again, why should Tomb Raider not have to have a male char if you are expecting Assassin's Creed to have multiple chars (and they have had female lead chars)?

Again, I am for full choice in every game. I can understand for established characters not having full choice. Are you saying for the Assassin Creed games they could only be done from one gender's perspective? Naw...you could insert either and get the same story.

Are you saying Tomb Raider couldn't have interchangeably had a male char? Ultimately any game could, but games are often told from the perspective of a character, and the story is written around that. Sure, Ezio could have been female, any of the chars could be. They could have offered a female Witcher as well. I'm all for letting people pick who they want to play - I just don't think having a single char in a game is always a bad thing.

Again I said for myself I prefer full choice but understand others feel a connection with an established character.

I am willing to bet there are people who would play as Larry Croft or Geraltina of Rivia.

And I don't think having choice in 2019 is a bad thing.

I don't think it is a bad thing either, and never said it was.

By the way, diversity isn't just only a thing in games nowadays, but also in movies. Many outspoken people demand not only lesbian/gay/transgender/black/other people to be portrayed in recent movies, but also to be played by actors who are just that in real life. The persona of the actor/actress must fit the role almost totally.

For example, Batwoman is officially since 2006 a full blown lesbian with a Jewish descent; originally she was being introduced to ensure people won't view Batman as gay, but the recent incarnation is a different cup of tea.

Anyway, the desired actress for this role was Ruby Rose - you might know her from Orange is the new black or John Wick. She had her outing when she was twelve years old, does consider herself bisexual and gender fluid. And she can act, too, so you might think she was the perfect fit for the role.

The target audience thought otherwise, accused her for not being lesbian enough, and having no Jewish descent, so she was attacked on Twitter, and just stepped down from the role, and deleted her Twitter account as well.
