Swiss citizen Erich von Däniken, world wide known author of a vast array of pseudoscientific books all dedicated to the thesis that aliens visited Earth in prehistory died at age 90 at 10th of Jan.
His rise to fame started with the release of the book "Chariots of the gods?" in 1968. According to him he sold over 75 million copies translated into 32 languages of his 47 books around the globe.
While in recent times his popularity toned down, many older people still do remember him fondly. Not necessarily because they shared his ideas, but because he always told them "challenge everything, even me", teaching them critical thinking. He always embraced controversial discussions of his ideas, and never avoided them.
Also when he was doing his group trips around the globe he often enabled his group access to areas in the local sights you cannot get into without good connections.
In his last years he was even convinced that aliens are living undetected amongst us right now, citing high ranking intelligence officers of an ex defense secretary of Israel. He finally slowed down his activities last year.
Here's a video of History Channel showing Däniken's most well known claims.
