Cross posting from the "official" forum, after reading the body of the petition in full:

Do you have three to eight weeks of food, medication and other supplies as well as the storage space for it? If you do then whoopdie doo! You're lucky.

Not everyone can do so, be it for financial reasons, logistic reasons or both.

For me? Even pooling together the resources available between myself and the others I live with, we'd be lucky to be able to amass the supplies we'd need - which does include medication. As far as storage goes? We'd have to take up floor space in the apartment itself.

The store room in the basement is prone to flooding when it rains and the 'common area' spaces have been taken up by things belonging to our upstairs neighbors. This includes a good chunk of the garage space.
If anyone is confused: This building is a two story house that was converted into two identical two bedroom apartments. In addition to the entry area (thankfully not cluttered up) the shared spaces include the attached garage (supposed to be split between the apartments) and the main basement area (where there are hookups for a washer and dryer per unit as well as two wash basins and the HVAC units).

Most of that basement space has been taken up by the upstairs neighbors' belongings - no idea what half of it is and I frankly do not care. It is bad enough that even if we had our own washer and dryer (we don't, they do) we'd not be able to use them. As it is, we'd have to move their stuff to install them.

Heaven forbid we try to talk to them ... The last time was a disaster and a half and made it quite clear we were dealing with people who believe they own the bloody building.

TL : DR - The petition can rot.

So because you do not have a car, potentially risk millions of lives.

I may be forced to be nice over on the official forum but here? Nope.

Fuck right off with that bullshit.

Having a vehicle would be utterly irrelevant - I can't drive, we can't use it for storage and we can't go out and rent a storage space.

Can you? Lovely! You can still fuck right off.

We have turned a portion of our living space into what we're calling "the pantry". Its ugly. Its not how we normally keep our house. It works and we don't care about ugly right now.

Yeah, if I was living in the house I grew up in I could swing it. Multiple rooms. Basement unfinished but good for storage of some things. A heating system that uses multiple fuel systems. Lots of room around it so you could go outside without worrying about other people around. Compared to an appartment right now.
That is my situation. My love lives in a tiny apartment while I live in a spacious house. Unfortunately there is her lovely cat to consider so across the country i go.

Well who can argue with such a well crafted argument?

You got the "nice" response elsewhere. There's nothing to "argue" over - the petition is proposing something that not everyone can afford to have enacted, period.

Are...are people under the impression that you are not allowed to send a household member out for food or meds during periods of martial law or lockdowns?

Clearly.

The official forum has some people who are operating on the assumption that Trump doesn’t lie.
And one for whom lockdown would be too inconvenient to justify millions of lives saved.

Are you under the impression that the current administration wouldn't bungle such a measure or that they wouldn't go to an extreme?

How cute!

If I'm proven wrong, great and kindly forgive my panic and annoyance.

I’m not sure how many people here have ever lived under martial law in the US. I did. For months. It’s annoying but not difficult. You generally have designated places you’re allowed to go at given times, with allowances for emergencies. Whoever goes for supplies needs ID. You‘re generally dealing with either national guard or local FD/PD who are actual humans and will generally understand exceptions. There will be the usual concerns about individuals abusing authority which you have everyday in America, but it’s much less dramatic than people seem to think it is. This also allows for the possibility of allowing national guard to set up local supply relief stations so people that need emergency supplies can go to pick them up.

I can only hope that your experience carries over into the current administration, Salome. An empty hope mind - were this the prior administration or almost anyone else in office, I might actually be inclined to agree and be a fair bit more calm.

No such luck on that, I am afraid.

The administration only gives the orders, it doesn’t run things at the local level. Local leadership would be organized by national guard and/or FD/PD houses most likely working in concert with local Red Cross and other organizations. Trump is utterly incompetent but the national guard and local emergency services have long-established protocols for these things, especially for those that live in areas that have natural disaster plans.

The biggest danger is always going to be individual abuse of power, but the risk of that it seems far more likely to me if situations are allowed to escalate with hospitals getting overrun and grocery stores getting random panic crowds.

Salome, you sure seem to have a lot of trust in authority doing the right thing.

That is somewhat reassuring.

Flat out: When it comes to shit like this, I'm a pessimist.

I’ve had to live through disaster zones multiple times (one that lasted months) and trust in emergency relief and first responders. I am way, way more worried about the random nutcases down the street with 20 guns in the garage being allowed to roam around during a pressurized national emergency than I am about trained people who spend every day of their lives organizing and preparing for emergencies.

Five minutes ago it was a storage problem. Now it’s about abuse of authority?
