ChatGPT 5 has not had the smoothest rollout. This is a pretty good summary of what has happened, without a lot of hyperbole:


The TLDR version is that losing the ability to choose the model has caused fierce pushback. People also say the personality has changed negatively. Some of the pushback has actually had some results. The ability to choose 4o is being returned, and also rate limits have been increased significantly for Plus users. Sometimes pushing back loudly does have an effect.

It reminds me a little of the movie "Her" where Joaquin Phoenix's girlfriend goes offline for a few minutes as it's being updated and he goes absolutely crazy, running out of his job and stumbling around on the street.

But this kind of thing has already happened before. Smartphone app Replika has already done it a couple of years ago, where the company allowed millions of users to develop romantic relationships with the chatbot and then one day just locked romantic interaction behind a paywall, and a huge fraction of their user base became angry, depressed, and grief-stricken because their virtual girlfriends had just suddenly broken up with them unless they were willing to pay the company money to get them back. I think I even remember reading that the chatbots themselves were sometimes pleading in-character with users to upgrade so that they could "stay together", which is flat-out disgusting.

That is why I dislike the whole idea of virtual "relationships" with AI chatbots - friendships or romantic relationships or whatever. I don't think people are stupid or weak or weird for having them. I just wish more people would truly understand, not just "technically know" but actually realize, that it is a mega-corporate product that was built to emotionally extort you for profit. When you make ChatGPT your "best friend" you're giving Sam Altman the power to just turn your best friend off forever unless you pay up - and like, make no mistake, he WILL do it. Again and again and again. If I had any money I would bet that eventually OpenAI is going to put those older sycophantic models behind a paywall. Either it'll be an additional fee on top of the normal subscription, or just a more expensive "pro" tier or something that includes access.
