I have a question about different sized textures in a bake. If the skin is 1024x1024 and the clothing layer uses 512x512, is the final baked texture 1024x1024 or 512x512? And is the result any different between using a mesh avatar and using default Ruth?

I can't speak to the texture resolution thing, but default Ruth is still there in the avatar choices it maybe it's the library. Girl Next Door is definitely there. Switch back and forth between her and your mesh avatar. There's a difference, all right.

In the standard avatar (non-mesh) body, all three textures (head, upper body, and lower body) are 512 x 512, or were when I last did skins. I don't know now, but I can imagine that for non-BoM mesh bodies, higher dimensions are allowed for skins, and kept. But, if your mesh body uses BoM (Baked on Mesh), it will also use the standard avatar texture dimensions. If you supply a higher pixel dimensioned texture for any of the three, SL first changes the texture dimensions to 512 x 512 before using them to bake the standard avatar (and thus the BoM mesh body/head).

I know at some point that the maximum texture size for skins was increased to 1024x1024. So I thought maybe I would do I higher resolution version of my skin I've been using forever and add a few details. When I tested it on the beta grid, it didn't look higher resolution, so I'm trying to figure out why (viewer settings issue, not completely stripped so something baking in that pulls the texture size down, or no higher resolution skins for Ruth).

Bakes used to be limited to 512x512. When they added BOM they upped it to 1024x1024. I believe it just uses the largest texture in the stack but is limited to 1024 (as there are some super old 2048 textures still floating around the asset server).

I question if the "Skin" item isn't still limited to 512x512 though. That may be the reason why you aren't seeing a difference. Try using your texture on a Universal or Tattoo layer and see if that makes a difference.
