Being a cunt to someone in uniform is the truly distasteful part.
And it comes with double irony since this entitled white woman thought she was being "patriotic."

It's yet another example of what I call the "our brave soldiers fallacy." One of my favorite examples of this fallacy was during WWI, when one of the greatest mathematicians ever, David Hilbert made Emmy Noether, another great mathematician, a professor. Something that was actually said to him was "What will our soldiers think when they return to the university and find that they are required to learn at the feet of a woman?"

Phony patriotism has always been used as a bat to hit progressives with. I've known a few conservatives who like posting soldiers graves and shit like that to try to shame black lives matter people and other progressives. And as this case demonstrates, actually BEING a soldier doesn't protect you from this if you happen to be a minority!

Actually this makes me furious in so many ways. First off, 3.2 million AMERICANS speak Spanish as their native language. Perhaps they are so ignorant of geography that they don't know that Puerto Rico is part of the United States?

Or perhaps they are just flat assed ignorant (that's my bet). Probably too stupid to even learn English properly let alone have the intelligence to speak two languages. To say someone was disgracing their uniform by speaking Spanish while wearing it ... I don't have words. But it makes me embarrassed to be an elderly white woman when I read crap like this. I don't know that I could have shown the restraint that she did, so kudos to her.

All I can say is that I hope someone as honorable and awesome as Xiara Mercado doesn't think that all old white women will treat her this way.

I've often wanted to learn how to say "Speak our language!" in a number of NA native dialects. Just to trip up English-only nutters. Then follow up their confusion with, "Oh, I thought you wanted to speak an American language!". =^-^=
There's an interesting little historical tidbit here. During world war 2, one of USA's secret "weapons" was native American radio operators. No need for codes when you're communicating in a language the enemy can't even begin to figure out.

I do consider this strange considering the fact that the USA don't have an official language.
The US is a nation of immigrants, and first-generation immigrants tend to speak their original language. Before mass communications, they tended to settle in communities with each other, where they could communicate and shared a cultural background. So you get towns like Pulaski, TN (Polish settlers) or Germantown, PA. New York City has always had immigrant neighborhoods with concentrations of Irish, Italian, Chinese, Spanish, Russian, etc. So an official language just wasn't practical. It is only recently that some on the right have called for an official language, as part of their overall distaste for multiculturalism and demographic shifts.

You ever notice how you never see anybody going up to like a pair of old ladies speaking some central European language and telling them they need to "speak American"? So weird...
