What is the layman's difference between BOM and textures applied to mesh objects now?

You will recall back in the day pre-mesh, we would apply clothing, tattoos, etc.. just by wearing them. When mesh bodies came along, that didn't work, as those items would go onto the avatar hidden inside the mesh body. Hence appliers were born, but they are a pain and specific to particular bodies. BoM (bakes on mesh) returns to the model of being able to just wear things, except now the texture goes onto the mesh body or head instead of the invisible avatar trapped inside.
