Wrong, that's an option but not a must. Which would most likely make the AfD even stronger in the outcome. So I don't see that coming.

In Sachsen-Anhalt the electoral procedure of the prime minister is this.

* first there are two rounds of voting. Prime minister elect is then the person with absolute majority.
* if the 2nd round failed the parliament can either vote for new elections (with majority) or go for a 3rd round. 3rd round happens if the parliament decides against new elections.
* 3rd round of voting has a change: now the person with simple majority becomes the prime minister.

Round 1 and 2 are mandatory. New elections can only be triggered by majority if round 2 fails and the parliament votes for it.

So it is quite possible that Sachsen-Anhalt is going to have an AfD prime minister within few weeks who has no own ruling majority. And needs to be tolerated from another party/mps.

BTW the AfD candidate Ulrich Siegmund is already demanding new elections, because he is very aware about that this would benefit his party a lot. Of course he's also aware about that this is unlikely going to happen.

Okay, I wasn't aware of that detail.

They still don't have an absolute majority, though. That's going to throw a wrench into their plans.

They also don't have the manpower or experience to govern a state, even if it's one with such a small population.

Anyway, we have too many Saxonies anyway, so I'm for dissolving the state after its now inevitable collapse.

The funny thing is that only Lower Saxony or Niedersachsen actually has areas where the old Germanic Saxon tribe lived.

Sachsen-Anhalt has, amongst other things, the original Bauhaus academy in Dessau, whose ideas spread all around the world and shape our modern cities, place of birth and death of Martin Luther, also places where he lived and worked, and the Hartz mountain range. The Brocken mountain is one of the mystical places where witches come together during Walpurgis night.
