On the assurances I've read here, I've persuaded Mrs. Beebo to watch the next episode. As for Episode 5, we'll just skip it entirely. I was so disturbed by the scenes (in concept as well just visually), that I'm not really up to the task of finding the point at which the mayhem stops.
At a theoretical level I can appreciate a writer who may want to explore "dark themes", but on a practical, personal level, facing the harsh cruelties of factual human life is difficult enough. These day I don't have sufficient emotional reserves to exhaust them on fiction. The impact of the Sandman scenes I did absorb was not equivalent to watching a gory (but somewhat silly) zombie apocalypse movie or even the normal body count of Game of Thrones; it was far worse. I suppose it's testament to the excellency of the Sandman storytelling that I devoutly wished I could scrub those lingering images out of my brain, whereas with the Walking Dead my most common reaction was "Ew, gross, who came up with that special effect?"
