There seems to be a divide in the country between those who are scared shitless and hunkering down in their homes trying to flatten the curve, and numbskulls out partying.
Think of it as evolution in action. We'll have fewer numbskulls after this pandemic.

Trump's Swiss army knife senior advisor for anything is his son-in-law Jared Kushner.

After he already single-handedly solved the Israel-Palestine conflict, Trump again turned to Kushner for advice on the corona virus. And Kushner outsourced that task to his own Facebook group called "EM Docs." Which are at least emergency docs, but by no means virologists.

Four months! Long time to self-isolate.

Glad I'm a stripling of 64 (65 in May).

I have no idea how this is supposed to work in practice for some people. My cleaner, Ywona, has two children, one aged 10 and one only a couple of years old. Her mother came over from Poland to live with them when the youngest child was born, partly to help with childcare and partly because her health isn't too good, and Ywona and her husband can keep an eye on Mum.

How they're going to manage self-isolation is a mystery -- she can't keep to her room and avoid contact with the children for 4 months, after all, so I guess she won't.

It must be a horrible position for them all to be in, knowing that one of the family is very likely going to infect Grandma with a disease that, because of her age and poor health, may well kill her.
Yikes! My mother in law said her retirement community is closed to visits and a lot of internal things got closed as well. She is in the group coming up with ways to keep up morale there during this.

"The prominent German media outlet reported, citing unnamed sources, that US President Donald Trump was offering large sums of money to German scientists working on a vaccine. He wanted to secure exclusive rights to their work, the newspaper reported.

Trump was doing everything he could to secure a vaccine for the United States, "but only for the US," the newspaper quoted an anonymous German government source as saying."

Hey donnie, you know that peace prize everyone knows you are lusting for. Past recipients did things like develop vaccines for EVERYONE.

New Hampshire schools are closing. They're going to allow parents who have to stay home to watch their kids to collect unemployment benefits, and relax the rules for licensing daycare facilities.
Which means my sister is freaking out right now then. One of her kids is a first responder so it is not like he can watch my niece, I am guessing they cancelled leave. My sister works for a company working on tests so she is probably working as well. Fortunately my niece is old enough to be a latchkey kid.

This is why HMG is refusing to close schools, despite what's happening in much of the rest of the world, and is, in fact, introducing emergency legislation to make it illegal to close schools without government permission.

A key strand in our Civil Contingencies Secretariat's plan for pandemics, which the government is working to, is trying to ensure vital services continue to function despite the inevitable severe staff shortages as staff fall ill themselves or have to self-isolate -- medical and care workers, first responders, power and utilities and telecoms services and so on.

That's why they're resisting the idea of closing schools as long as they can -- doctors, nurses, paramedics, firefighters and police officers, and workers in all the other key services have children, too, and many of them are single parents, who will be struggling with child-care anyway as more and more nurseries and playgroups have to close because of illness, and many childminders will be unavailable for the same reason.

Our government really do not want to do anything that will that particular problem any worse than it absolutely has to be, and good for them, for once.

Illinois and Ohio have closed all restaurants and bars, except for delivery and take out.

The problem is when parents and other potential caregivers have to work. A lot of companys here have people working from home and during all this supervisors will no doubt be understanding if someone has to step away from work at home to deal with something.

Off topic but just saw an announcement that the uk will join the travel ban.

(I don’t know the situation in England when it comes to daycares and such, so please do not think I am replying to compare, different regions and have different situations, and all that.)

Here, starting Monday, all daycares will only accept children of healthcare workers (and emergency?) Our daycares, not all since some are private but most, are subsidized (cost per child is 5$ per day) so it is probably much easier for the government to make such decisions. The private ones will also have to follow these directives. It will still be a headache for many I’m sure. Not everyone can stop working, service workers etc. are probably going to have difficulties. The premier asked everyone to please help each other out/ solidarity blah blah blah. We’ll see.
