No, they haven't actually started it yet but it's coming.

I really hope we don't do it for obvious reasons, but this would be one of his most unpopular decisions yet:

By comparison, the invasion of Iraq had a huge surge of public support because of post 9/11 bloodlust. No such thing is going on now.

Of COURSE boots have to hit the ground eventually. The weekly Trump and Dump market manipulation with tariff threats has been priced into the market by now.

Lots of sabre rattling to do first maybe.

A good friend of mine, whom I met in SL, lives in Venezuela. He tells me he, and most other Venezuelans, will welcome anything that removes from power Maduro and his fellow crooks, even a US invasion.

I fear he's over-optimistic and Trump is about to make a bad situation even worse -- Iraq and Afghanistan are not hopeful precedents -- but from what he has told me about life under Maduro's regime I can quite understand his point of view.

I remember a video clip from postwar Iraq, when Western reporters interviewed an elderly Iraqi woman and she simply stated that "the devil you know is better than the devil you don't know". Saddam Hussein was the devil the people of Iraq had known.

Trump loves crooks. He's more likely just moving in to get his cut of the oil and will otherwise prop up Maduro.

I fear you are correct, or at least that anyone with whom the US replaces Maduro, will be just as bad, though perhaps in different ways. But it's my friend's country, not mine, and he lives there and I don't, so I can't really tell him he's mistaken.

Of course it's done for oil, for what else?

These are the proven reserves of countries with crude oil. Reserve means that we do know where the oil is located, and that it is technically possible and economically feasable to extract it. This is from Wikipedia.

So in about 15 years +/- a few the fracking boom in America is over. Since many Americans are resistant to decarbonize until then America will need new sources to satisfy its enormous hunger. Also the AI boom drastically increased the amount of energy needed in the USA. xAI's data centers in the desert are running on gas turbines.

Luckily for America Venezuela has the biggest reserves world wide, and even luckier most of it is still in the soil and for once there are no pesky muslims around, which is a welcome change. So all America needs now is an agreeable sock puppet in Caracas, who is willing to deliver oil to America for decades and that problem is solved. Again. Also since the clock is ticking and developing new extraction sites takes time, so years, better start early.

If Venezuela had no oil America would never bother to do there anything.

As the president of Colombia says: "(Oil) is at the heart of the matter,” Gustavo Petro told CNN in an exclusive interview, noting that Venezuela has what are considered the largest oil reserves in the world.

“So, that’s a negotiation about oil. I believe that is (US President Donald) Trump’s logic. He’s not thinking about the democratization of Venezuela, let alone the narco-trafficking,” he continued, adding that Venezuela is not considered a major drug producer and that only a relatively small portion of the global drugs trade flows through the country."

Fighting drug trafficking is just the facade they are keeping to make it sound somewhat justified.

GOP representative Maria Salazar recently discussed in an interview on FOX News the potential invasion of Venezuela.

She was brutally honest what's so interesting about Venezuela for her:

“Maduro is not Fidel Castro, Maduro is not a brave boy.… He is on that very nefarious list of the terrorist organization, that the airspace above Venezuela has been closed off and the commercial airlines from the United States are not flying. He’s understanding that we’re about to go in,” Salazar replied.

She then went on to outline the top three reasons for more U.S. intervention in the Latin American country. Reason number one? Oil.

“Venezuela—for the American oil companies—will be a field day. Because it will be more than a trillion dollars in economic activity. American companies can go in and fix the whole oil rigs,” she said.

Salazar continued.

“We’re gonna be doing a favor to us, to our children, to our economy, to our oil companies, and to the Venezuelans.”

The necessity of repairing the damage to Venezuela's oil industry caused by years of mismanagement and underinvestment, and by the policies of the Venezuelan government and by US sanctions, in order to get the economy going again is pretty much a given no matter who is in control, I think. US oil companies are going to have to make some pretty serious long-term investments in Venezuela before they can hope to see any return.

The point is for Trump Organization to manage the oil investments and profit from construction, pumping, storage, docking fees et al. Trump Organization will also benefit from their investments in coastal and mountain resorts as well as dare we admit slave labor to support all of the above. Google maps will soon display the Gulf of America and the Trumpian Sea. Trump Organization considers this venture much easier to secure, and closer to "home," than Gaza.

The rebellion will be relentless, and guerilla, but that's never stopped the US from ditching into unwinnable actions.

We'll just have to see what happens. Historically, the US' typical method of securing regime change in the Americas has been to organise a coup rather than to get directly involved. Maybe that's the idea. I shudder to think what will happen to any military action with Trump and Hesketh running things.

THIS administration? Organize something? Hahahahahahahahaaaaaa...................................:crying:

In the immortal words of an old editor/boss of mine, which you should definitely hear in a slot-machine lady voice, "These idiots couldn't organize a circle jerk at a god dam Boy Scout camp."*

* Actually, one of the milder pronouncements to which she was prone.

Yes. ...and Trump would brag publicly about how proud he is of the super secret coup he's organizing.

You mean something like the US air strikes on Iran's nuclear sites? Yeah, that's the thing: Trump's administration can do organize things, if they put their act together.
