Since i saw some of Sebastiao Salgado's images in the Independent on Sunday supplement back in the late 80's i've been a huge fan of his work. His black and white photos impart a real beauty before you get that shiver of reality that he's documenting.

Sebastiao Salgado

I saw an exhibition of his "Genesis" project at the Natural History Museum and i visited it a few times. I was so blown away with how these photos required me to scrutinise them. The detail is perfect, the black and white contrast is spot on; with each of the images having a perfect velvetness to the blacks which defies current digital images. The subject matter and his angles are always thought provoking.

The first images that got me were the ones in the series of the Brazillian Gold mines including this one:

Some of my other favourites:

These are just a handfull. Almost every single one is carefully manipulated to give meaning to the subject. The black and white format really helps to merge the subjects together. Each of his documentary series, though completely different subject matter, can be viewed with others as was achieved in his Genesis exhibition.

That’s because we have all been collectively traumatized by the pussy grabbing child-man. We now see him in clouds and waves.
I've also never seen a true image of Neptune...

Here you go, 4 meter statue of Neptune in the Canary Islands.
And where did the sculptor of the statue get their image of Neptune from? I'm pretty sure there's no Roman and Greek god photo reference book they referred to.

From Roman mosaics like this one that was buried by Vesuvius. There are numerous mosaics, statues, and other images that survive from Roman times.

And where did all those artists and designers get their image of Neptune from? I don't think the dead bodies of the gods were ever put on display.

Like many cultural items, the Romans borrowed the Greek Poseidon for their god Neptune. In earlier forms, Poseidon dates back as far as Greek culture can be traced (c. 1450 B.C.), but his story as we know it today comes from Homer around 700 B.C., where after overthrowing their father Cronus, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades drew lots for ruling the world. Zeus got the sky, Poseidon the seas, and Hades the underworld.

The actual images of the gods are just idealized humans, in the way Hemsworth and Evans are in the MCU, or body-builders and football players are in mundane sports. Classical mythology assumed the gods had "perfect" and immortal bodies, but they shared the dysfunctional personalities of mortals. That made for better story-telling. If the artists and sculptors used people as models, they just used good-looking ones and then enhanced them to look heroic.
