I'll probably get back to BDO sometime this year (when I've levelled all my foxes) but I'm wondering whether a game controller might be better than trying to get my left hand working the whole WASD, Q, E, F, V, shift keys

I can't promise to change minds.
It has its pros and cons. It's really quite different from WoW. I spent some time playing it and would like to like it more because of the differences in combat and "endgame". It's far more open-ended than current WoW.
