I Am Completely Confused By BoM

With Maitreya? I wasn't aware they had come out with a BoM-compatible avatar yet.

I still have to wear a full body alpha layer to keep my system avatar from poking through. Does that requirement go away with BoM?
Yes!

TECH ALERT!

OK so here is the real deal: BoM is no rocket science, it is just a specific set of textures.
If a BoM enabled viewer spots an object with a BoM texture it will do the following:
  • It will look up the coresponding bake texture of the object's owner. It will then render that bake texture instead of the BoM texture.
  • It will not render the corresponding bake texture on the classic avatar anymore.
That is all. If you for example wear Slink hands with a classic avatar and apply the Bom onto the Slink hands your whole upper body will poof as that is the corresponding bake.

Now this also means once you got your hands on a dev-kit for appliers you can apply BoM to almost anything (someone even used it on a helicopter). All you need are the UUIDs of the bake textures.

If you got the Maitreya BOM relay you can wear it just like normal BOM but you will see red if you fuck up and wear an alpha.

The Maitreya relay doesn't yet support clothing alphas.

Oof, BOM seems to be more complicated than what was presented. I think the takeaways are: 1. Make sure your mesh body parts are BOM enabled. 2. If they aren't, see if they have a relay you can use. 3. Take off all alphas before attaching and/or pressing the relay buttons or wearing the BOM enabled body parts.

And finally, there seems to be a "bug" (at least for Catwa heads) in which you can use applier layers fine, but then convert the mesh head to BOM and then you can slap on system layers like normal as well. It's very weird but a very delicate system. I mean, I applied my eyebrows using an applier and then converted the head to BOM and tested out some system layer makeup textures, which worked fine. But I wouldn't recommend it in the long term (just keep on making test copies, see what works and what doesn't!

Is it a bug? From your description it just sounds like the base layer becomes BoM enabled but the onion skin meshes remain as applier layers over the top, which is what I think some of the mesh heads and bodies are doing at the moment.

I'm putting it down as a bug with a huge question mark on top considering that it might break something in the future. But, like I said before, make several copies just in case.

there is no "layered BoM" any extra layers reamain just that: applier layers, clothing alphas seem to be a problem if the body skin layer is not set to masking mode

It might be I'm misunderstanding, but it sounds to me like you're saying that, once it is BoM enabled, you can apply classic system layer skins and tattoos on the head AND your usual makeup appliers over the top? If that is what you're saying, then it's supposed to do that - it's an intentional feature in a 'best of both worlds' sort of thing, so not a bug. Or are you saying something else more glitchy is happening?

I've seen some heads and bodies where they offer 'lite' and standard versions - the litest ones are just BoM, but the standard ones have a base layer that can be enabled as BoM while still having the onion skin layers to receive Omega appliers over those (which is currently how a lot of the bodies just using BoM relays are).

Once you go BOM you can wear applier makeup on the older heads with onion layers. However, if you try to put applier skin on afterward, you will have to wear an alpha. It is one or the other.

I think I’m gonna keep waiting. It’s expensive to jump in anyway, and I bought so much wardrobe for my Petites I have something for most occasions.
