The lyrics to this song are incredibly powerful, as is the inspiration behind it. David Archuleta, a former contestant on Amercian Idol, was raised in a very devout Mormon family. He struggled for years with his sexuality and in recent years finally came out as being gay. In the process, he walked away from the Mormon church which is anything but welcoming to gay people.
At first, his mother did not speak to him for a week. Then she reached out to him and told him that she loved him and she had also left the church because she did not want to be in a church that did not accept him exactly as God made him. She said if he was going to hell, they would go to hell together. It is a such a beautiful expression of love. It is also a reminder of how much damage organized religion does to people.
