Minecraft has a huge modding community. There are hundreds, possibly thousands of modder created assets, ranging from simple retextures, to quite complex objects with their own unique behaviours. There's a lot out there for less scrupulous folks to steal, repackage and redistribute as their own work.

Back In The Day there was a holy war over modpacks that lead to authors trying to put kill commands in their mods if they detected certain other mods installed or certain installation directories because they considered it against their vision or whatever.
