A new AAA MMO has launched in the west - Throne and Liberty, which is a free to play high fantasy MMO. I have not loved an MMO this much in a very very very long time. I am completely addicted to it. I have 38 hours in it already and I have been only playing it for a week. It is incredibly polished, fun, and a breath of fresh air in a fairly stagnant space. It is on PC through Steam, and also on PS5 and XBX. It has been pretty well received and hopefully will do well.

I have rarely seen such an optimised game since a while, it just runs so smoothly... I am amazed. I really would love see WoW 2 using the UE5 engine, it would rock.

It is impressive from a technical standpoint. The no load screen teleporting is a marvel.

Watching the UI just fade away and action start after finishing the character creator was really sweet. I ooo'd in RL. =D

And I blame you for this.... ;)

My only complaint so far is that I've been kicked twice by some 'easy-anti-cheat' process. I don't have any cheat software installed. I'm not sure what's setting it off.

Green hair is nice but I'm assuming that we must be human.

There's 3 ear "types" one is rather pointy, still rounded at the tips, but easily passes as half-elven.

But yes, no explicit race choices. Neither explicitly human, nor significantly different from it. :)

Its a very pretty game. I am not sure I have the patience for an MMO these days.

Also on a side note, how many accounts does Amazon think I need, I have an Amazon account, and a Goodreads account, and a Twitch account, and an Audible account, and now an Amazon Games account, that just links to my Steam account.

Which I am supposed to get some sort of free thing for, but for some reason it had a timer and I had to create an Amazon Games account, and so I don't even know of thats valid anymore.

Picking a name for the game itself was annoying because everything I tried was taken.

Oh no, what did I do?

I finished off a quest, and this little girl is asking for help, so she starts... kind of rambling... and she talks about being rescued by some prince or something. And I am thinking, "She wants me to find something, no, she wants me to find the prince, no he is dead... then I kind of.... glazed over (f...f...f...f...) and next thing I know she is thanking me and I am not sure what for but she says something about joining a tournament.

I'm still in the 'I dunno what this is for, guess I better pick up -*>EVERYTHING<*- stage. One npc helpfully drilled home the point that I should always upgrade everything because I guess that investment can be transferred forward to new equipment? (haven't succeeded at that yet), so now I'm using mats instead of hoarding them the way I usually do.

I absolutely do not want to bother with crafting food. Every game with a food mechanic... I'm just... no. Would rather sell all the mats and buy whatever specific thing I'm told I need for the few times I team up and not bother with it.

And I'm going heavy into a support class (wand heals/curses), with some minimal staff stuff as a secondary. And I intend to solo. So, well, cheers and celebration to me I guess for picking one of the slower characters. (And to complete the absurdity, I did create a 2nd character, using sword and board/wand so I can do even less DPS as a solo character. ;)

I'm enjoying it so far. Not really invested in the story(ies), but progressing through them is fun. I struggled to find the 'Amitoi House', that maybe could have been explained better.

The one thing that I sorta feel is missing.... I really prefer playing Pet Class-Ranged Casters. Warlock in WoW, Mastermind in City of Villains, Elementalist in Aion, Necromancer in Diablo/Rift/ESO. The Amitoi provide a bit of combat support but they seem very limited/passive. It's nice that they scoop up drops/loot though.

I swear if I ever go with a Bow character (not likely) I'm going to name him "TheOneWhoNocks". ;)

Yeah, I have been doing some gear upgrades, but also I am worried that its going to be a case of "you will want those materials later so hoard them" a bit.

The tournament thing just ended up being some sort of wolf hunting themed quest line. I have to admit, I am really bad about facerolling through MMO quests unless something goofy or super compelling is happening.

So far, I am going with a sort of, Rogue sort of build, I guess. I have been using the daggers and crossbows. I have not really gotten a good rotation of moves down yet and I can't really remeber how I handled WoW and the number keys with WASD movement. Maybe the necesary moves were just simpler there. I mostly played Fury Warrior there, but near the end of my run I was doing some light warrior tanking and off tanking in raids.

One worry I have, though it probably would be a while, I didn't realize this was an NC Soft game. I want to say they have killed 2 MMOs I started to get into before. AION, which may not have been killed but reworked maybe. I forget why I stopped that one. Wildstar was definitely killed though, I was logged in to watch it happen. Wildstar had such a fun world and aesthetic.

*And* City of Heroes/Villains as well, which they gutted in order to bring their wildstar servers online or something. I still miss that game. Wildstar was fun, I liked the engineer, but I didn't get very far into it. Didn't seem very 'solo' friendly, iirc.

And AION. /sigh. I played the beta or early access or something and got kind of invested in my character... which was purged at release. /shakesfist Tried to create a clone in the character creator but it just never looked right. The community was -super- toxic, one of the worst I think I've ever encountered. When I went back to it years later, the UI felt -awful- and clunky. And then there was the hard stop at level ?20?ish, where advancing to some upper mostly pvp driven area was just not possible for me. The entry areas to get into it were slammed with so many players that all I could see were floating names, no characters. Couldn't move, couldn't fight... even telling me I had died took over a minute. It was -broken- and I gave up on it.

Ok, I want to share, just in case anyone else had this issue. As previously lamented, Helpie left me (coward).

Around this time, Instarted having a new problem, I kept dying. Like, a lot. I also noticed that "New Helpie," aka "Unhelpie" was not throwing down Healing like Helpie had been doing. I figured this was just, part of some tutorial mechanic.

It turns out, I was just, out of healing leaves. So I bought a few ten thousand of them, and now I am back to staying alive again!

Too bad its all AFTER battling a bunch of annoying Goblins in that whole storyline.

Also, Inhad a chance encounter with a bunch of people and got to ride a big ass stone whale off to an island full of max level monsters. Which was both funnand a bit confusing (as to where the whale was taking us).

Sounds like we're having very similar experiences. I noticed the 'world leaves' or whatever they were maybe a little earlier, I stay stocked up on them but I'm trying to rely more on my own wand/heals. Ended up on the big flying whale as well, which opened up a waypoint I'll use later I guess.

Fell into some "Conflict" and dieddieddieddieddiedied. I guess there's a mini-boss in the middle and pvp all around him.. I didn't understand what the objective was, I was just hoping to be there when he finally got killed, but I gave up on that.

Ran one pickup group dungeon... and felt useless as a healer. Didn't let anyone die, except for one idiot who wasn't with us and got locked out of the boss encounter. Apparently I didn't find the object I was in there to get and am expected to do it again. I'd really rather just solo pve though.

I'm going back and doing all the levelling pve/exploration/story stuff. I'm not sure if I'm going to stick with it. Some of the 'follow me!' or 'wait for so'n'so' quests go on and ON and ON. Directions/hints are really obtuse and even for simple stuff I find myself googling "Where TF is {X}" only to find it's not even close to where I was told to go.

Anyway, the skill-ups are interesting though. I'll stick with it until progress on that grinds to a halt and then probably move on. :}

I'm still chugging along. I'm not sure how long I will last once I finish the story bits and do a bit fo random exploring. I've never been into PVP or "min/Max" endgame mechanics. I am only level 36 so far. I'm fighting in the Sandworms area at the moment. I also swapped out my Crossbows for the old Sword and shield combo.

I made it to level 50, which is the max level.

I have one more story chapter to do but I am... Kind of getting bored of the game. Seems like both of you have already gotten there.

I will probably finish the story out but that will probably be the end of my run here. Its basically just, do some story and contracts along the way, remeber to open the menu and upgrade things using an annoying systems that is as generic as it gets.

Also, its like, the game makers cut some content or something, because when I finished I think, Chapter 7, or maybe 8, the one in Sand Worms area. I gained something like 4 or 5 levels. Which put me in line with levels for the next bit.

Plus, there were several large surrounding areas that never really got used. There was one tiny step into the coatline zone, nothing in whatever the space is between that town hub and the coast. Nothing in the area north of the deser full of stone golems and Ents. And nothing really in the werewolf area.

And based on the enemy levels, these all would have been in that level 44-48 range that I suddenly "skipped over" with many levels.

Its like the game just decided, "time to move on" and these zones all got skipped so I could do a storyline fighting orcs, then fuck off to the opposite side of the map for the final story chunk.

I would almost think it was some weird "catch up" mechanism, except the story is all laid put in that codex book thing in a branching tree format, and there just, isn't anything there for these zones.

Its weird.

I am still enjoying it and just taking my time with it. I do think some stuff from Korea is not yet in the global version, which may be where a bit of the disconnect is coming from. It is my understanding that some systems are not yet in the global version either. I have been alternating between T&L and New World for my MMO fix right now, but also into Dragon Age now so it is limiting my time with other games.
