I think that's his point, though. The Germans did, as described by Susan Neiman in her book Learning from the Germans, while both the US and Britain have yet to confront our pasts in a similar way.

Well, I DID advise a young Japanese YouTuber who has just discovered some bits of Japanese WW II history that he might want to get his career and personal life a bit more centered before exploring it in depth. It's one thing when a young German learns because they have an entire, national social norming to emotionally support each other. But Japan is still hiding a lot, and is also a culture where the nail that sticks out gets hammered A LOT. That YouTuber I mentioned should explore Japan's past, but ... make sure they can deal with the reactions from society, and make sure the relevations aren't going to destroy him emotionally and financially. The rape of Nanking, the Bataan death march, "comfort women", Unit 731 ... is a lot for a 17 year old to take in by themselves.

For myself, like others in this group, the schools I went to were quite good about not varnishing our past after about the 3rd grade (eight year olds).

I have a suspicion that the Kawaii culture is an intentional enculteration? vaccination? to keep Japanese youths from going down some dark paths that are still possible becuase they've never full dealt with their history.

When I was in college, it was a state requirement that the candidate for a Bachelor's degree from a California state university or college take (and pass) a course in California history. Before taking the course, I thought it would be a tedious and boring class. Instead, it was the historical version of lifting rocks and logs and seeing what strange things lived in and under them. California's 2nd (the 1879) Constitution (our current one) is a case in point. It contained powerful anti-Chinese provisions (Article XIX) that were not repealed until the Election of 1952. I had never heard of this before taking the required course in California history.

Where else is an ordinary student going to learn these things, but in a history course that acquaints them with the good and bad parts of our history? To hide something like this, that exists in plain sight if one but looks (but one has to know to look!), is to indulge in the worst kind Know-Nothing-ism.

Hannah-Jones missed a huge chance to educate Todd about black family structure and how it has changed through the decades.

I'm sorry, but I don't see your point. In this context Hannah-Jones is drawing attention to the way Todd assumes that the default is white.

There may well be, and probably are, other assumptions in play there, too, but that's the one she's highlighting, or so it seems to me.
