Ahem, so to speak...

Microsoft’s augmented reality Hololens goggles are getting a rough ride in tests by the US Army, according to internal military evaluations seen by Bloomberg and Insider.

Soldiers testing the headsets have complained about their “mission-affecting physical impairments,” and say that wearing the goggles can cause headaches, nausea, and eyestrain. Acceptance of the tech “remains low,” says a summary prepared for Army and Defense Department officials and seen by Bloomberg, with soldiers complaining that the headsets don’t “contribute to their ability to complete their mission.”
One testimony reported by Insider was even blunter. “The devices would have gotten us killed,” said the tester — referring to the light emitted by the goggles’ head-up display, which could alert enemy troops to the wearer’s presence.

So, they're supposed to test the things without testing them? Just how is that supposed to work?

The only way to know if the things work as intended is to test them using real humans in a simulation.

So... will the US military now replace Microsoft with Apple? We'll see.
Being in the extremely lucky position for having access to an Apple Vision Pro for two weeks and getting paid for it, meaning I didn't have to pay the $4600 for the 1 TB version, I feel now experienced enough with it to answer myself: no, the US Army will not.

The Vision Pro is really a great piece of technic, but yet without a good selling point. The Vision Pro like all other VR devices before is lacking a must have killer app, which makes people want to buy such a thing.

Since it is driven by using gestures without the need of extra hardware alone, it feels like Minority Report come true. Also the quality of display output is really stunning.

Problem is though the external battery pack, which you got to store around somewhere and its weight. Since it is about 2.2 lbs you will definitely feel the burden of wearing it over time.

Most people I do know are just using it for viewing videos at the moment. Which might be fun, but then again quite an expensive way to do so.
