Good evening. I have decided to interrupt our usual discourse on what makes up a good troll; what the hell is primfeed, how much the new viewer sucks, and PBR is going to melt my GPU and possibly make me join a UFO cult.

Let us instead focus our hamster like attention spans on the latest doom and gloom threads talking about SL going dark.

Linden Lab gone dark again ? - General Discussion Forum - Second Life Community

and this lively one from Twitter. (It will be a cold day in hell before I call it 'X')

Daniel Voyager on X: "@lauraeleven Sadly in the past few weeks loads of private estates (regions) have gone off the grid. It might because of the new PBR viewer along with other things. Maybe the cost of living is starting to bite those in Second Life." / X

Discuss!

I'm torn. I kind of feel like if crash of 2008 didn't take out SL, nothing would. On the other hand, there was only a slight bump from covid and that's been used up.

I don't know, I'm kinda ADHD about long forum threads having read so many -but I didn't see anything in that thread that made me particularly concerned. Am I missing something?

SL's been dying since 04 or so; what's different now?

[edit]ok vague whispers about "something big" from Daniel Voyager (more credible than most, but still vague) -no idea what it means, like literally no clue.

I'll throw a random-ass guess out there tho;
Kids Online Safety Act passes Senate despite concerns it will harm kids

There's been doom n gloom discussion about how SL is dying ever since I joined in 2006. Thread was started by someone who tends to...how might I say...engage in a bit of anxiety about SL's future a bit too often.

I like this comment from Sammy Huntsman:

"Totally, don't you know that it's not forums until someone drops conspiracy theory drama. Lol "
Daniel needs to #define loads.

but I didn't see anything in that thread that made me particularly concerned. Am I missing something?
Not that I'm aware of. If anything there seems to be a baseline of stability. Somebody decides to close a venue, some regulars takes over ownership. A Victorian micro-nation's "Guvnah" decides to get out of SL, someone else takes over as Guvnah. A designer shuts down their store and rebrands with a new one. (Blueberry)

SL's been dying since 04 or so; what's different now?
Not-sure. Panic-y Fashionista girly girls? Lack of quality trolling? Not enough Strawberry Linden?

Is this the new sky is falling thread? Because I miss those.
You scare me sometimes, Free. This is not necessarily a bad thing.

We could work that in. There does seem to be some going on but I don't think it's nefarious. I think the Lab is just getting ready to release the new mobile app with some large fanfare. After all its supposed to be a game changer.

Just to get off track and back on track from the office track.

I have literally not noticed any performance degradation from PBR.

I don't understand the outrage.

It does seem to be hardware specific. Many users did not even keep ALM turned on because of their systems did not handle that well. There also does seem to be some Firestorm issues as well, and since it has the widest usage, there has been a perfect storm of outrage.

Three or four years ago I'd get 20fps or so, then I upgraded to a 2gb nvidia card and got 20 to 40 fps without ALM. Two years ago I got a new pc with a 4gb nvidia card and my fps would get as high as 100fps -after installing the new firestorm it's back down to 30 or 40. Noticible but meh.

Then again, I don't think I've been hitting the places that have a lot of PBR content in them yet, either. It might tank if I start to or if the contagion spreads.

Have you tried the mobile app? I have, It's a total joke. It won't draw a single new user, and the negative feedback on the app will further harm SL's reputation

PBR is yet another disaster LL has introduced. It also won't attract a single new player, but will cut out many long timers with older computers that will be unable to run SL at anything more than stop action.

Kill your base in exchange for non existent fresh blood... wtg LL, another fuck up as usual

(and they wonder why I got kicked out of the SL forums)

I've developed this personal "the sky is not falling down"-thesis, proof me wrong:

as long as Prokofy Neva is around Linden Lab will be doing fine, because they don't dare to take away his reason for living - complaining about Linden Lab...

Prokofy is a hoot, he makes the funniest posts.

He made a post one time about when he was new, and had his 512 "first land" parcel. It seems that way back then, if you abandoned a parcel it subdivided into 16 sqm parcels, all for sale at $1L each.

Well old Prokovy accidentally abandoned his land and immediately land bots swooped in and started buying the 16's. By the time he realized what happened and managed to reclaim a few, most of it was gone.

I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard.

Prokovy hates me, like I'm personally responsible for every instance of mainland blight he sees.

He seems to think that when you buy a parcel, you also buy the view, and he screams bloody murder if someone dare put up something that he doesn't approve it. He is whats wrong with mainland.... whining, complaining, busy bodies.

You are in good company. Prokofy has always ranted against me for being supposedly privileged in SL (part of the feted inner core) because I was a beta user and involved quite publicly with SL. I was the subject of many a blog rant over the years and did ban Prok from my previous site. They have mellowed a bit but still trot out the classics from time to time. Prok is definitely an institution at this point.

Linden Labs has a long history of botched roll outs, that's undeniable. But they've also had a lot of long term progress as those roll outs get smoothed out over time. If SL stayed in it's original state, it would certainly be dead by now. Lots of people hated the mesh roll out but it would be difficult to image SL without it at this point. PBR was botched but I think it was necessary. It will certainly get smoothed out a bit over time.

LL has the difficult task of not breaking 21 years of content when they introduce new features. That is no small feat. Yes, PBR was not a smooth rollout for sure. However, I think some of what is coming now that the foundation is in place may have as big of an impact as mesh in fundamentally changing SL. Time will tell.

Next skyfall: WebRTC replacing Vivox voice, which is rapidly approaching.

Yeah, I needed a new laptop anyways ... and I've always had problems with the current voice. I dunno of it's me or my laptop or a compression issue or what but everyone sounds like they're talking from inside a tin can, it's really hard to listen unless you actively focus just on the voice and nothing else.

Well yeah for me the issue is that Vivox itself is just a tool, which we don't have under our control. So we are doomed to live with the parameters Linden Lab choose and has setup for us.

And in my opinion Linden Lab is not using the best possible bitrate Vivox offers to its customers, far from it. It's okay-ish, but nothing more and definitely worse compared to Discord.

At best, I found the app to be one of the more disappointing means of overheating my phone. Especially considering how many textures never loaded. (-_-)
