Woke up to 5 inches of snow before this thing really even got rolling. We're now in the middle of a Blizzard and don't expect the storm to move east into Missouri until later today.

My terrier puppy insisted on going out (for personal needs). But she's so short the snow was already up to her belly at 9 AM. I had to shovel a quick path out to the yard and put her on a leash - - when you're blind, snow just screws up ALL of your usual landmark recognition.

My biggest concern today is that our power stays on. It's looking positive on that note in Kansas SO FAR, but I'm not sure how all the folks to the east are going to manage.

Well, it's not usually snow that swamps a power grid, it's ice. So long as it's not freezing on the power lines you'll probably be fine :)

I'm very aware. I was office manager for our electric utility for years, including several major ice storms. Office workers didn't get off easy - we were called out at any hour to man the phones and organize the process. Sometimes for several days at a time.

I've been watching our individual service line (from the alley to the house) as a warning - and I'm relieved that I haven't seen ice buildup on the triplex, yet. We're not out of the woods quite yet but that's a hopeful sign.

I remember one ice storm that laid the entire county's electric system on the ground just from the weight of the ice. It took 2 weeks to repair it.

After weeks of almost nothing but rain we're finally getting some sunshine for the next week. After that is when I expect it to snow. One of the advantages of living so close to the Coast Range foothills, it doesn't snow very often on this end of the valley.

NYE at our folk's house in southern AZ.

My sister & nephew were trying to get home before Blair hit, but the airport they were flying into got shutdown while they were still 30min out.

I tried to talk her out of driving through the storm, but she went for it, in a rented 4 wheel drive vehicle. Took 7 hours, but they made it, unlike dozens of other motorists she saw and a semi as well.

I, on the other hand, got -cooked- driving from AZ->CA, with the low angled sun beating down on me the whole way (also a 7 hour drive). Went to the farmer's market near my house today in shorts/t-shirt, while my sister sent me vids of "The Blizzard of the Decade" burying her house in at least 25" of snow. It's like we're not even on the same planet. =}

No snow down here but we went from 70 yesterday afternoon to 33 this morning. Whole week is projected to be highs in the 40s, lows in the 30s. No ice around either.

It has snowed a lot here, but not really anything amazingly special? But then, I am pretty used to the snow.

My only real concern is that there wasn't great parking outside of work (on the street). There are a couple of company trucks there so hopefully anyone coming by that might want to ticket me gets the hint that the building is essentially a utility building.

Clear and cold here. Sun makes it hard to drive, and overnight temps just breaking zero F with daytime highs in the 20's F. A fairly normal January so far.

Got down below 32 for the first time this season... to 31. LOL.

Covered or brought in the vulnerable plants and the dogs are loving it (they're all snow types).

Sometimes, blizzards make the simplest functions a pain. Our tiny terrier with 4 to 6 inch long legs repeatedly wants to jump the drifts along our patio to get into the grass (which is basically gone right now, buried deep). She doesn't understand snow and it breaks my heart to watch her desperately look for a place to drop before she gives up.

The snow's so deep our usual snow removal guy is snowed in and can't make it any time soon! I'm just one woman with a snow shovel. I'm doing all that I can and it's not quite enough :(

You are doing your best and that is what counts. Your terrier knows this. 🤗

It's been a tad unseasonably warm here - highs in the 50s and 60s, lows in the 40s. Mornings have been foggy, but it burns off by midday. I can't complain.

So Enzo is visiting us. Yesterday we went from 29 in the morning to a high of 37. Rains started around 10:30 pm. Temp was down around 29. I laid in bed, listening to the heater running, the raining pinging, turning to a sleet? that had things lightly dusted in white. 3:30 when I heard noises, keeping me from finally getting to sleep so I got up and it was Joanie being all fucking chipper and bouncy. We had a little more dusting of white when I said fuck this and went to bed at 5:30 this morning. I work up at 10:30 so yay 5 hours of sleep. Outside it is 26 and seems to be about 3 inches of snow on the ground, more in the drifts. Power is stable and state wide we have like 56K people without power. Snow is still falling and we have like 56 road closures. Other than my throat is dried out from the heater running, we are all good here.

I find it odd that people who insist on every home being all electric (and banning gas) never seem to take into consideration how people are going to stay warm enough without any power. Even if every home had a fireplace there aren't enough trees left.

Present company excluded (except that one idiot), the stupidity of the human race never ceases to amaze me.

I mean, I prefer gas over electricity because gas heat is more efficient and cost-effective than electric. But you still need electricity to power the fan that moves that heat out of the furnace and around the house, don't you?

We have a big floor furnace. It has a thermostat but I can go in the cellar and turn the control to "Burner" which bypasses the electronic switch and keeps the heat running. This starship has manual override!

I lost electricity this morning from 6-noon. It’s minus 20c, but I hardly ever turn on the heat, so was mostly just annoying. I’m in an apartment, second floor, and my windows face S-E. Its always too hot for me, so I leave the door slightly open. Obviously, I close it at night.

I do have to say, though, at -20, I wear a hat and mittens if I’m going out.
