The Continuing Resolution that allows the government to stay open lasts 45 days. Republicans have so many conflicting demands that whoever gets the gavel next will have to rely on Democrats again. They could extend their office by allowing a shutdown.

As soon as the vote was called the House adjourned for the caucuses to meet. I expect that starting late tonight and over the next few days we will find out who the candidates are.

According to Politico, both Kevin Hern, leader of the Republican Study Group, and Steve Scalise are exploring support.

Hern voted against the bipartisan continuing resolution last weekend while Scalise voted for it.
