I had a joke all saved up but hey, more interesting to offer some historical!
This happened with English in the Americas and English in England too. In the 1700s, England and the American colonies were all rhotic English, that is, talk like a pirate ARRRR English. Somewhere in the 1800s, England shifted to non-rhotic while in the Americas, the accent remained more or less the same.
Compare asking for the wireless password:
England: 'why
rless' 2 and a half syllables.
Americas: 'why YER less' 3 syllables.
