...what do you think I need? I already know some basics about C++, Java, and Javascript. I am going to teach myself about computer graphics (OpenGL). I realize that I need to know how to design, build and especially "gamify" it....

I was just thinking of building such a game as a tech demo to put on my resume....

If I might recommend; start with a unity base. That saves you the trouble of fighting inventing -everything- and leave it more open for others to create for you.

If you are going the Unity route, definitely brush up on C# (Unrelated to c++), as C# gets used for Unity scripting a lot.
