Sims 1 & 2 to be released?

This is hovering somewhere between rumour and a leak, but supposedly EA are releasing updated versions of Sims 1 & Sims 2 that can be run on modern computers.

Now, I've never played anything but Sims 4, and god knows that takes up every free minute of my time as it is, but I can't deny I'm somewhat curious. Probably not curious enough to spend a lot of money, however. Still, what was the appeal of these earlier games compared to Sims 4? Not the graphics, obviously. But overlooking the dated visuals, how was the gameplay different?

I have only seriously played SIMS1, so I guess maybe there is some level of Nostalgia factor?

There is also, somewhat, an underlying movement in gaming in general to stop letting old titles "die". GOG is a big pusher of this movement.

Wayyyy back when, I got upgraded on a flight and ended up sitting next to a rather genial fellow who was one of the developers of The Sims. (I'm sure he's someone hugely game-land famous, but I don't know who he was. I'm not sure we even introduced ourselves, so I may never have known who he was.*

He told me they thought they had a pretty good game early on, but when it was released they were flabbergasted to start getting calls from serious people like city planners, sociology professors, etc. He said, "Honestly, it was just this simple game -- it ran off a little spreadsheet! We had no idea what we had created until we started hearing from those people."

* I'm the ninny who was in line at a club in LA when some guys got escorted to the front of the line and I blurted, "Oh, I think I went to high school with that guy with the glasses! What's his name??" My friend informed me his name was "John Lennon." Oh.

The promo for the release (confirmed, not just a rumour) is pretty amusing, and probably doubly so if you've played the game.

Holy shit the pool ladder thing.

Please tell me I missed an indoor barbecue grill.

Ok, I watched it again, and it was soooo obvious I feel dumb for missing the cooking fire.

Just hoping the shenanigans I've seen in Sims 4 don't find their way into the older Sims. Been playing Sims 3 a lot to get away from events I'm not allowed to opt out of, bug fixes/updates that cause more problems than they solve, ads for DLC, etc.

I have both of them. Playing the Sims 1 has been incredibly nostalgic. Having the Sims 2 finally playable (it was a pain in the ass to get it to run before) is also fantastic. I installed the Sims 3 the other day for the hell of it, but I was reminded of how fucking ugly the sims are and uninstalled it. Happy to have the originals back, even though I do genuinely love # 4.

I doubt it, but I always wonder if rereleases like this give data that the companies consider for future games.

Like if suddenly half the audience of SIMS4 flocks to this, would they look at the data and think, "Maybe we need to rethink the SIMS4 strategy."

I spent the most time with Sims 2. There are a lot of mods available, and it was fun to build in. Never did as much with 3, and don't have 4. Since I had the full Sims 2, I just went to EA to download and it turns out my EA account was tied to my Excite email, and their servers have been gone for years. If they make it cheap and I can add it to Steam I just might give it a go.

Sims 4 is doing booming business and I very much doubt that the re-release of Sims 1 &2 will do anything to dent Sims 4's popularity. On the contrary, it just helps boost enthusiasm for the entire franchise.

You won't get the re-release for free even if you've purchased Sims 1 & 2 in the past. This version is updated to run on modern computers, so they are for sale as a different collection than the originals. That being said, the price is pretty cheap. For Sims 2, $30 for the base game and all expansions (except Ikea). Get it bundled with Sims 1 and the price is only $40. I was mildly tempted until I saw a few extended online play sessions and realized that I'm really really happy with Sims 4 in comparison.

Not bad. I was not expecting them to upgrade the existing games, but I wanted to try to get the old versions running. For the amount of content, $30 for Sims 2 is reasonable and I may get it if I can avoid EA's store.
