Daily Mail and Times run hit pieces attacking the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institute) for spending some money, about 2%, overseas teaching kids to swim. Tories pile on condemning them because Brexit Britain hates any non british people now so much we would rather see kids drown than a UK charity help them.

As a result donations to the RNLI surge so much their donations website crashes.

Some people -- including two Conservative MPs -- are so annoyed that the RNLI is spending 20p out of every £10 it collects on helping prevent children in some of the poorest parts of the world from drowning that they're ceasing to donate.

Words fail me, almost, but I am trying to imagine the circumstances in which one of these people, if the lifeboat crew (all volunteers) were trying to pull them from the ocean, would turn down their assistance, saying, "No, no, because you spend 2% of your budget helping children in developing countries to avoid drowning, I'd rather you left me here to drown" and I'm finding it difficult.

The whole thing was created by the Times and the Mail:

Un-bloody-believable.

Well there's your real fake news.

I'm sure it's not the first or last entirely manufactured and completely outrageous story. No one can know unless they have the time to research every damn story a paper runs.

The official complaint shows that Altona Town Court Justice Kyle Canning had posted in February an image of a noose with text that read “IF WE WANT TO MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN WE WILL HAVE TO MAKE EVIL PEOPLE FEAR PUNISHMENT AGAIN.”

According to the commission’s press release, Canning resigned in June after the commission served him the complaint regarding the post and has agreed “never to seek or accept judicial office at any time in the future.”

It's reminiscent of The Sun in the 1980s, when they ran with the idea of the "the story too good to check," which -- back before people became aware of this stunt -- involved phoning up a "loony left London council" like Haringey or Lambeth to ask for their reaction to something they claimed to have heard the council was doing, like banning black bin bags on the grounds they were racist (an actual example).

Back before people realised what was going on, more often than not the call would be taken by some luckless person in the council's refuse collection department who, not having heard anything about this, would assume it was some official policy she'd not heard about and try to improvise a response, which the paper would then print as a defence of a policy that didn't actually exist, along with outraged comments from right-wing MPs who had been asked by The Sun to comment on the improvised defence of a non--existent policy, and thus the controversy over racist bin bags (or whatever it was this week) would begin.

This carried on until Haringey (I lived there at the time, and was a member of the local Labour Party, which is why I remember all this) introduced the policy -- standard now, of course -- of telling staff not to respond to press inquiries at all but, instead, to refer them to the council's Press Office, and making it known that any paper printing this kind of fake story would automatically be sued for libel.

That put a stop to the practice, but this seems to be a contemporary equivalent -- in this case, the Times and Mail didn't need to check with the RNLI, but simply took the information out of that organisation's annual financial report and asked a couple of their tame but over-excitable rent-a-quote Tory MPs to fulminate about it.

An investigation against Folmer began in February when electronic service provider Tumblr reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that a Tumblr user had uploaded a child porn image, the attorney general’s office said.
Genius!

The charges they make in cases sometimes seem a little weird.

Sexually abusing children - Awful
Child porn posession - Awful
Criminally using a communication facility - What? I mean considering the two charges above why charge him with this? What is this anyway? I found this page which explains it.

Criminal Communication Facility- Drug Crime | Worgul, Sarna & Ness, Criminal Defense Attorneys

In Pennsylvania, using a “communication facility,” an instrument that transmits sounds, images or data, to commit, cause or facilitate a drug deal, can lead to your arrest. This means that you can be charged for using your cell phone or landline to communicate by phone, text message, or email to commit a felony drug crime.

Under federal law, each time you used a communication facility to further a drug crime you can be charged with a separate offense. Every separate phone call or text will be an additional charge that prosecutors file against you.

...

The maximum penalty under Pennsylvania law for criminal use of a communication facility is seven (7) years in prison, a fine of up to $15,000, or both.

It says drugs since they are drug attorneys but I assume it applies to sex crimes as well. So if he made 10 phone calls that would qualify him for 70 years in prison. That all seems ridiculous. Let him get the 70 years for the first two offenses, not this stuff.

...

Well I think he has just the one charge. Apparently he uploaded that one child porn image to Tumblr, via his phone.

I suspect the "communication facility" charge is probably an addon. Like how if you commit a burglary, you can get a separate "possessing criminal tools" charge tacked on for carrying around a screwdriver to pry stuff open with while robbing the house. And then prosecutors can use all the time those extra charges could add to a potential sentence, as a bargaining chip for a guilty plea.

That would explain it. I've read that over 90% of criminal cases in the US are plea bargained. It does seem to me like an unfair 'justice' system where almost everyone charged with a crime never see their day in court.

Yeah. My feeling on the theory of it all is, if they plea guilty and go to jail anyway, giving up their day in court is no big loss. But in practice, there's two big problems:

1. People sometimes get very little jail time in exchange for a plea, maybe even no jail time at all, when the crime they have committed justifies a whole lot longer sentence, like JEFFREY FREAKING EPSTEIN

2. Even worse, innocent people can be so overwhelmed by the "potential" jail time that they plea guilty to crimes they didn't commit just to avoid the risk. This is totally unjust, even if they serve very little or no jail time at all but still have to live with those charges to their name.

https://www.sahanjournal.com/digital-disinformation/somali-mob-didnt-attack-man-in-minneapolis-but-facts-wont-stop-the-hate/

I've seen this video, when it was first published by the local news. It was pretty horrific. The guy is lucky to be walking considering all they did to him.

They were not, I repeat, not Somali.

I wonder what goes through the heads of the people who share the lies, or shall we say, fake news; perhaps something like, "Well, you know, normally I would be ranting about black people, but I guess my hatred of the woman who dares to talk back to the criminal in the White House is greater, and by extension all Somalis are now the go-to group to blame any attacks, or other crime on, that happen in Mpls. Hey, we can always say it happened in her district by Somalis."

All in service of glorious leader.
