Police have also evacuated a neighborhood not far away after a bomb was found in a crashed car on a street. All city schools are on lockdown.

The gunman is still at large and has not been identified. He reportedly live-streamed the shooting on Facebook.

The shooter is evidently a white Australian man. He has allegedly posted a manifesto online that whinges about "the Invaders in our lands".

Police have a person in custody but have said there may be others (although a statement like this is very common in mass shooting situations). They've warned the entire country that "no one should go to any mosque under any circumstances" until things are in hand.

New Zealand's last mass shooting was in 1990 at Aramoana, in which 13 people were killed.

According to the latest police report there are now four people in police custody, three men and a woman.

Human is, IMHO, stretching it more than a bit.

He defended a perhaps slightly conflicted white woman who attended a vigil for slain Muslims after condemning a woke brown Muslim woman who had criticized pay for play politics.

Ms. Omar's comment was condemned in part because :

1) She's not white

2) She's a Muslim

3) She can't afford an expensive PR firm (yes, NP's parents hired a spin doctor*)

4) She's female

I'm reflecting on the media circus conducted around the encounter between a Native American man and Nathan Phillips . The endless debating, 'seeing it from both sides' and rightful severe condemnation of appaling threats sent to the young man.

I was taught that it was polite to lower my gaze in the presence of my elders as a young British Christian-raised woman - but maybe it's different for girls?

If there isn't already one, I hereby stipulate Internet Rule No.999 that nothing is as simple & straightforward as it first appears on the internet.

I think it's assuming a lot to say that Chelsea Clinton criticized Ilhan Omar because she's not white. If there's a link for that please post it; I had only read that she joined in the mistaken belief that criticism of the actions of Israel's government was equivalent to antisemitism. She was wrong to jump on the right-wing bandwagon and she apologized.
I saw an answering tweet from Rep. Omar which, oddly, I can't find now. I can't imagine why she'd take it down. It was a great tweet about meeting with Chelsea and talking about the issue. I was looking forward to seeing the two of them join forces.

Australia's prime minister has suggested an anti-Muslim senator should be charged after he hit a teen who cracked a raw egg over the legislator's head

Plus senator's supporting goons choked him.

Anning came under blistering criticism over tweets on Friday, including one that said, "Does anyone still dispute the link between Muslim immigration and violence?"

Words fail me.

Anning was widely condemned for his first speech to the Senate in August advocating reviving a white-only immigration policy and using the term "final solution" in calling for a vote on which migrants to admit into the country.

Real antisemitism. Would be prosecuted for this is some European countries.

He deserves far worse than an egging, more like public disgrace & stripping of his position.

Sry for lack of clarity - I meant in general, just as Obama was opposed due to existing while black (EWB).

No funny quip for this one, just sadness

BILOXI — A former Mississippi Gulf Coast police officer told a judge Monday that she had sex with her supervisor and then fell asleep while her 3-year-old daughter was dying inside an overheated patrol car.

Cassie Barker pleaded guilty Monday to manslaughter in a plea bargain after being indicted on a second-degree murder charge. The Sun Herald reports prosecutors recommend the 29-year-old Barker spend 20 years in prison. Harrison County Circuit Judge Larry Bourgeois said he wanted more time to consider the case and would sentence the ex-Long Beach officer April 1.

Cheyenne Hyer died Sept. 30, 2016, after her mother left her strapped in a car seat for four hours while Barker was with her then-supervisor at his home. The car was running with the air conditioner turned on, but wasn't blowing cold air.

The girl was unresponsive when Barker returned. Authorities say Hyer's body temperature was 107 degrees when she arrived at a nearby hospital.

"I don't know what I could ever do to you that could be worse than what you've already experienced ... You will forever be entombed in a prison of your own mind," Bourgeois said to Barker.

The mother had left her daughter alone in a car at least once before, at a store in nearby Gulfport in April 2015. Police responded and child welfare officials took temporary custody of the girl at the time. Barker was suspended from the Long Beach police for a week without pay. The girl's father, Ryan Hyer, said he was never notified of that first incident.

"Every time I close my eyes, I picture her suffering and then I picture her laying in this coffin," Ryan Hyer said Monday. "I still see her smiling and laughing in my head and I would assume that smile and laughter turned to pain and suffering in that instance."

The father is suing the Long Beach Police Department and the Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services for the wrongful death of his child, saying the child welfare agency should have taken stronger action after the first incident.

I'm not sure I agree with the judge. Even having her child temporarily taken away the first time for leaving her in a hot car, wasn't enough to stop her from leaving the kid in a hot car, again. I think the judge might be overestimating the strength of her conscience.

But then I'll admit I'm extremely cynical about parents being let more or less off the hook after killing their kids in hot cars because "they've suffered enough".

YouTube "kid shows" need to be banned, exhibit #3167

An Arizona mother is accused of abusing her seven adopted children to get them to perform for her popular YouTube channel, "Fantastic Adventures."

Machelle Hackney and her two adult sons were arrested Friday and are facing abuse charges.

Police said Hackney withheld food and water, restricted restroom access, beat and pepper-sprayed the children when they failed to follow direction for YouTube videos, according to a probable cause statement from the Maricopa Police Department.

"Fantastic Adventures," which has 700,800 followers and more than 242 million views, features the adopted children in different sketch videos.

Some of the children told investigators that they had not been to school in years. One said he “was in the green screen room most of his life."

They also claimed their adoptive mother abused them whenever they forgot their lines or didn't participate as instructed, according to court documents. They said Hackney would use a hanger, belt brush or her knuckles to beat them.

Officials performed a welfare check after police were contacted by Hackney's biological daughter, who was informed of the allegations by her adopted siblings. During the check, officers found one child in an unlocked closet wearing only a pull-up diaper.

"Officers came in contact with the six other children, who appeared to be malnourished, due to their pale complexion, dark rings under their eyes, underweight, and they stated they were thirsty and hungry," according to the probable cause statement.

One of the boys was in pain when police arrived, saying his mother had grabbed his genitals earlier in the day, court documents said. Another boy said Hackney would pinch the tip of his penis with her nails until it bled.

One of the girls told authorities her adoptive mother-pepper sprayed her genitals, and afterward, she was in pain for days.

She said that Hackney would "pepper spray all over their face and body, spank them, force them to take ice baths and when resisting would force their head underwater as well as she will make them stand in the corner with their arms raised above their head for several hours at a time."

The children told Department of Children's Services officials that their mother would wear a mask to protect herself while she pepper sprayed them.

Police said they found two cans of pepper spray in Hackney’s room along with a closet with a deadbolt.

The children said they would be locked in the closet for days without access to a bathroom, food or water.

One of the children drank three 16-ounce bottles of water in 20 minutes while police were interviewing him, according to court documents. Another child told police that she hadn't eaten in two days and was only being allowed to eat because police were at the home. And a third child was afraid to eat because she didn't want her mother to smell the food on her breath.

One of the children was shaking and afraid to answer questions from police, the documents said.
