You're Invited: Second Life Town Hall on AI & the Future of Our Virtual Community

<<

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly present in both our physical and virtual worlds, the Second Life community is coming together for a Special Town Hall event to explore its evolving role and impact within our shared metaverse.

This special event will include an open and interactive conversation focused on the opportunities, concerns, and community values surrounding AI in Second Life. We’ll be diving into topics that matter deeply to residents—from identity and authenticity to economic impact, creative ownership, and the future of social interaction.

This event will be hosted by Second Life founder Philip Rosedale, who will facilitate a lively discussion with the community on all-things-AI. If you’d like to make an initial brief presentation or give prepared comments, please SIGN UP HERE.

Topics for Discussion Include:
  • How AI-generated avatars may affect identity and trust in social spaces
  • Generative AI and the Second Life creative economy.
  • Emotional manipulation, consent, and transparency with AI-driven characters
  • Use of AI in customer support and other non-in-world services
  • Balancing creative opportunities and responsible use of emerging AI tools

Yeah, we're boned. If you thought last year was bad, just watch as both the creator and consumer class are completely wiped out by the tantrums of an unhappy, terminally social media outrage-poisoned few. See y'all in Opensim. Us kids will be waiting there to welcome you with warm, open (and scandalously bare) arms.

Did they stop running the AI bots thing?

I had set up a bit to test and then later the website seemed to be gone. Maybe it was a temporary test or something.

How long are they planning to talk? 5 days? 5 weeks?

In Second Life everything is gamed until goes no more. So that debate on responsible use of emerging AI tools will be a long and interesting one I guess.

I'm WAY more interested in knowing what they'll do about account thieves posting shady links in group chats than I am anything they mentioned there. The idea of people using AI's to generate new avatars sounds like a net positive to me. I am only slightly concerned about AI players manipulating people at this time.

Oh man, I just realized that the "Any girls submissive when younger" dude can now ramp up his game and maybe better mix up his opening line.

I'm afraid it'll be an ongoing problem, no matter what LL tries to do about it. Accounts will always be hacked, and some of those will always be put to use for scams in group chats and the like. A diligent membership with instant responses of "SCAM" and reporting the account will likely be our only superhero.

Is it just me or does LL look desperate these days? First the wild and disastrously ad campaigns (Facebook AI fail, paying users to open phone app etc...), then the willingness to do as the golden cash cows (creators) want in secret Zoom sessions. Now they cave in to user pressure on AI and bots... today they started a desperate campaign to infuse the SL economy with rapid money by drastically reducing buy fees for 50 hours... (which will of course lead to bigger cashouts with more shopping during Easter holidays - at the expense of future income as most fiscaly responsible users will simply prepone their planned spending and buy less L$ later).

That is not the high and mighty, aloof LL we used to know. What's wrong with those guys? Should we call for a doc or even keep the coroner on speed dial?

Maybe. But this AI stuff is Philip. He's too unrestrainedly brainy and goes on these futuristic technodelic journeys that occasionally, accidentally, trigger something useful, or at least fun, like a virtual world entertainment simulator left over from a haptic singularity experiment.

I keep wanting to do a write up on the phone app.

It really comes down to... I just don't get it.

It's just, very weird. I am admittedly VERY used to the regular viewer. But I am not sure you can even change clothes in the phone app. You move weird, like, too fast, you can't use any HUDs from what I can see.

You can change outfits (Outfits are under "Avatar" in settings. Why not under "Outfits?" Maybe they have plans to expand features here). But there's no ability to add or remove single items on ones avatar.

Maybe. But this AI stuff is Philip.
I agree with Khamon, although I'd describe Philip a little less charitably. Philip Rosedale is a hardcore tech-hypecycle cryptobro and while I haven't heard his stance on AI in specific, it's very likely to me that he is fully on board with AI. This is not LL caving to user pressure over AI, it's Philip enthusiastically doing what he sees as his part to make the AI Future.

Well I dunno about that. He is weak to the hype-cycle but I don't think I've heard of Philip doing anything like obviously bad.
