I think belief in and hype for the "metaverse" - like, that whole big fad that just recently came within the last couple of years and died more or less out of the gate - has always been nostalgia driven. 80's/early 90's nostalgia is what's commercial right now, and the metaverse is, after all, the 1980's/early-90's idea of what the future is "supposed to be like".

Phillip Rosedale started SL for all the same motivations that got Zuckerberg into trying to make the metaverse a thing; but I think the reason SL persists while all the others were DOA or soon after is because SL's users literally turned it into something different.

Part of the reason the more recent hypewave died is that all of the "new hotness" products were riddled eith crypto/blockchain/nft scams.

Basically, everyone was hoping to find some excuse to make NFTs more than stupid ugly monkey jpgs in hopes that it would catch on.

They may not even contain blockchain or nft tech, but it was all the same style scam. Look at the whole thing with land being sold near, who was it, Snoop Dog or something?

Like those jogs, they forget about the key aspect of digital. Digital, inheritly has no scarcity. The idea of making fake scarcity to make money is dumb.
