Supreme Court rules Trump has immunity for "official acts"
The Supreme Court on Monday ruled that presidents have immunity for "official acts," but punted to the trial court the question of whether former President Trump's alleged conduct in his Jan. 6 case was protected.

Why it matters: The 6-3 decision, though not a sweeping victory for Trump, all but guarantees that his Jan. 6 case won't go to trial before this year's presidential election.

Donnie is accidentally pushing the right buttons at the moment but SCOTUS bias, as horrific as it is, is not ultimately going to save or destroy DJT. I used to hope our legal system could act like a baseball backstop, but that was corrupted by the same orange clown.

It is now ultimately and decisively up to the voters. All the denialism and fake shit that spews from his mouth will only go away with a landslide victory.

That's what the fate of my country has come down to.

This ruling delays the process long enough until after the elections.
So a huge victory for the Republicans IMHO.

Yes, but could be worse. I'd rather courts give him immunity than declare him innocent of what he did on January 6th since the ladder would be better for his optics. And this ruling stops short of saying he is immune from what he actually did on January 6th in an unofficial capacity.

Tell me the U.S. President is a King without telling me he is a King. Tell me the majority SC is wearing MAGA hats, without showing me they are wearing MAGA hats. I hope the American people are smart enough to see what is happening right now and that their votes in November are about so much more than picking who will be King of the U.S.

Although I saw this ruling coming from a mile away, I'm still at a complete loss for words. We need to get out and vote this November, and vote blue in such numbers as to make it impossible for the Republicans to game the results. Anything less will be the loss of our freedom and democracy, the loss of our country as we know it!

Justices can't impeach a sitting present.

The Game Plan now should be Guantanamoing trump, mtg, LauBo, Mitch, Speaker of the house "Micro Johnson", rojo, Ted Cruz, Rubio,, all the "alternate electors" and the rest of the GOP thugs, their cronies, and their backers. All as an official act to preserve our Democratic Republic. He's the executive in chief, time for some traitors heads to roll!

I have been thinking a little bit and came to the conclusion, that this supreme court ruling is in fact comparable to Hitler's Enabling Act of 1933.

The Enabling Act gave Hitler the power to rule without the involvement of the parliament or acting president. It was the foundation of the Nazi regime.

This ruling here has similar consequences: it destroys in one important point the separation of powers, namely judiciary against the acting/former president of America.

We had the Enabling Act, America now has this unsavory ruling with who knows which consequences in the future.

Hmmmmm.... do we want to sink to their level or risk becoming a fascist state. I think both options sound profoundly intolerable.

I have read that some of what lead to Germany's decline back then traces back to Frederick the Great, who was so very much on top of managing the German empire that there was no need for a vast apparachek of civil service and public officials. This left it open wilder swings of politic on an inconstant course.

Democracy has always been a "gentlemen's agreement" in the U.S.; we have been fortunate that those in the highest office had normally been of sober temperament with an awareness of their place in history, and a respect for what had gone before and it's methods. Rules which existed were in a large part the self-enforced customs of restrained men and women who voluntarily practiced them.

The Pope is infallible, and now apparently so is the American President. What splendid rot. The man is nothing but a wasted soul and a useful instrument.

Agreements have been disregarded. History has been ignored. The face of politeness has been replaced by that of the jackal. We are now broken.

You've got one thing wrong: Frederick the Great (1712 to 1786) did not manage the German empire nor was he ever its emperor. He was "just" the king of Prussia, which was one of the many states which made up the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation. Also one if not the most militaric one by a long shot. In fact it was so powerful, that it was part of the pentarchy. Prussia also faught war against Russia, and won.

Many historians by the way think what led to Nazi Germany was the treaty of Versailles in combination with a head of state - Hindenburg - who was purely anti-democratic, and had the power by constitution to rule by decree only in case of state emergency.

True, but That Fucking Guy has been promising to do things that scrotus has preemptively given him immunity for... Biden can demonstrate why that was a bad decision now, before TFG can follow through with much much worse. Or he can wait and gamble away both our democracy and judicial system.
