If we assume a (high) overall Federal tax rate of 22%, said embezzler of $50,000 will pay $11,000 tax and keep a profit of $39,000. Meanwhile, any indictment against them is, at best, complicated by this "brilliant" move.

The IRS does not need a 1099 form to move against ill-gotten gains.

As usual, Frank Abagnale is sounding quite credible while talking out of his .... erm ... not his mouth. (If, in fact, he even said this and it isn't AI.) The "conman convincer" in this particular tall tale is the assumption that the courts let all offenders off with nonexistent penalties.
