That made me think of the Hamm's brewery in San Francisco. It had a huge neon sign on its roof that stuck out clearly on the skyline of the city, then, particularly when viewed from the Central Freeway (an elevated part of U.S.101 in San Francisco, then). It was in the shape of a goblet that would appear to fill with beer with a foamy top, then empty and repeat.

Any chance you're old enough to remember the Hamm's signs in bars? The were beautiful animated woodland scenes.

I was way too young to be admitted to bars, but I saw them during vacations to places along Russian River. The restaurants there frequently had a bar that was visible from the dining area with such signs. They were fascinating.
