I've been seeing this a lot lately, particularly on Facebook. It's the letters OBJ enclosed in a dashed box, which I assume is a Unicode placeholder for an emoticon that can't be parsed. At first, I thought maybe it was a Chrome or Linux thing, but I'm seeing them on Chrome on Linux, Firefox on Linux, Chrome on Windows, and Chrome on Android. They just started appearing maybe a couple of weeks ago or so. Anyone know what's going on?

Hmm, mysterious!

I don't know but it's Unicode U65532.

Someone on reddit says
It's a placeholder character (Unicode object replacement character (U65532)) that appears for an un-renderable character or object.
Probably whatever font you are using in your browser doesn't know how to display some other unicode character.

Whatever font Chrome is using hasn't kept up with new emojis would be my guess.

FWIW, in Windows I force Chrome to use Cambria (serif), Calibri (sans-serif), and Consolas (fixed) and don't seem to have any problems.

I changed my default fonts in Chrome, but I'm still seeing the placeholders in Facebook. My guess is that iOS has added new characters to its fonts, and they haven't propogated out to non-iOS systems yet. It's the only thing I can think of.

they have released a flood of new emojis that my android phone can't read yet, so I guess it's that.

Why does everyone use sea otters for their otter emoji? Sea otters are assholes.

This happens every year when the Unicode Consortium continues to discrominate against ferrets :ferret: and releases a new load of emoji that don't include ferrets and then Apple (usually) pushes a new update that includes them before anyone else catches up.

Edit: Apple releases macOS Catalina 10.15.1 update with new Emoji, HomeKit Secure Video support, and more - 9to5Mac
Ah yes, the time of year to pity the linguists at the unicode consortium who are tracking down what umlauts we need and then the big news in all the major papers is what emojis they added.

If this keeps going we will at some point have enough emojis to serve as hieroglyphic writing.

As for the original post, one of my friends posts on facebook and randomly has characters. I don't know why. Maybe it's something to do with her having an old iphone? It doesn't matter but is a little odd.

What is that? A Morse code thing? I'm not familiar with dots and dashes meaning 0 and 1. They don't in Morse code.
I meant we had two systems we can use unicode for in addition to normal writing: morse code and binary. Not the most efficient methods, but they can be done.

I still don't comprehend but it probably doesn't matter. I have heard there are 10 kinds of people who understand binary, those who get it and those who do.
