Nvidia is buying Arm Ltd., the company behind the now ubiquitous ARM CPUs in tablets, smartphones and soon to be Macs, for 40 billion US$. Nvidia declared that they do not want to change the business model of Arm Ltd., the customer neutrality and open licensing shall remain as it is right now.

This is huge - the market leader in graphics (often called the graphics mafia) buying the market leader in low power consumption CPUs. And it will affect all of us, considering how wide spread ARM cores are today.

Of course regulatory bodies need to approve this first.

That might explain the movements in the market lately. Apple might have been influenced by this deal when they announced they are switching from intel to ARM chips, and nvidia's RTX 3080 should solidify their market position while they digest ARM.

Oh, they plan to move to a RISC OS and architecture? But their intentional market is workstations? Maybe they are too lazy keep up a secondary OS and want the same IOS on wortkstations and livestyle products as phones, watches and mp3 players... sounds a bit risky (pun indended) as a reduced instruction set could well drive off professional users who rely on legacy code.

Apple has three reasons for moving over to ARM:

  1. higher margins. ARM CPUs are cheaper than Intel based ones, and Apple has an in house ARM development team for over decade.
  2. less power consumption. Intel CPUs have not reached their own announced goals in the last few generations, which is the reason why CPU coolers in MacBooks are running more often than expected.
  3. Bad quality assurance by Intel.
That they will be able to natively run iOS apps on Macs without much hassle will be a nice side effect.

The British Government did the unthinkable - it intervened the acquisition of ARM Limited by NVIDIA in terms of "public interest intervention."

The funny thing about this is that ARM already is not British owned at all right now, but belongs completely to the Japanese company Softbank since 2016.
