SINCE 2022, when Massachusetts voters approved the Fair Share Amendment tax on incomes over $1 million, debate has swirled over the impact of the new levy on the state’s business climate.

Prior to its passage, opponents of the Fair Share ballot question predicted it would backfire — failing to generate meaningful revenue to address the state’s transportation and public education needs, and hurting our economic competitiveness along the way.

But nearly three years later, it’s becoming clearer and clearer — the Massachusetts millionaires tax has been a total success, and an incredible benefit for our state’s businesses.

If we're not allowed to eat the rich, then at least let's make sure we tax them.

A manual for new recruits to the far-right Proud Boys organization details the extremist group's peculiar stance on masturbation: while its exclusively male members are encouraged to drink booze and engage in street violence against anti-fascists — ostensibly in self-defense — they are told to follow a strict policy of "No Wanks."

"A Proud Boy may not ejaculate alone more often than once every thirty days," states the group's "initiation ceremony manual," the document reads.

"That means he must abstain from pornography during that time and if he needs to ejaculate it must be within one yard of a woman with her consent. The woman may not be a prostitute."

It must be terribly soul-crushing belonging to an organization that's ostensibly a political group, but needs to police your sexual behavior.

If we're not allowed to eat the rich, then at least let's make sure we tax them.

Illinois tried to pass something like this but it failed. They wanted to convert the flat tax to a graduated tax rate. All sorts of measures to ensure higher brackets always had higher rates etc.

Anyway, since it failed, everyone's taxes went up, equally. So much for all those ads claiming our taxes woukd go up if it passed.

California voters will decide in November whether to approve a redrawn congressional map designed to help Democrats win five more U.S. House seats next year, after Texas Republicans advanced their own redrawn map to pad their House majority by the same number of seats at President Donald Trump’s urging.

California lawmakers voted mostly along party lines Thursday to approve legislation calling for the special election. Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has led the campaign in favor of the map, then quickly signed it — the latest step in a tit-for-tat gerrymandering battle.

“This is not something six weeks ago that I ever imagined that I’d be doing,” Newsom said at a press conference, pledging a campaign for the measure that would reach out to Democrats, Republicans and independent voters. “This is a reaction to an assault on our democracy in Texas.”

Republicans, who have filed a lawsuit and called for a federal investigation into the plan, promised to fight the measure at the ballot box as well.

Carl Hiaasen's latest novel, Fever Beach, concerns a Florida Man who gets thrown out of the Proud Boys for being too stupid and starts his own rival organisation which has a more tolerant policy.

It's not his best book but it's very entertaining, and thoroughly skewers Matt Gaetz.
